San Francisco & New York: Payot, Upham & Co / D. Van Nostrand, 1883.. xxii,[2],240pp. Octavo. Chocolate brown cloth, stamped in bind, lettered and decorated in gilt. Frontis, errata and illustrations. Patch of lower fore-edge of upper board (3 cm) scraped, slightly dusty, endsheets uniformly tanned, but a very good copy. First edition of "the earliest California imprint devoted solely to wine making as distinct from vine growing ... [It] is a detailed manual for California winemakers based largely on methods used in France ..." - Gabler. The author, an attorney by profession, maintained the La Questa Vineyard in San Mateo County. Haraszthy praised this work as "about the best book on viticulture that has been written for many a year." With the 1893 pencil ownership signature, on the front free endsheet, of a member of the DuVivier family, principals of the prominent New York wine and liquor merchants, DuVivier & Co. There are a few scattered pencil marginal annotations and comments, in a small hand and largely in the first half of the text. GABLER G36200.

This work covers all aspects of rural life in an encyclopedic form including hunting, gardening, fishing, falconry, wine and beer making, cooking, and bee keeping.
This two-volume sixth edition is filled with 34 fascinating full-page and folding plates as well as 30 in-text woodcut engravings. The 5th-10th editions of 'Maison Rustique' were edited by Henri Besnier.

Crescentiis (or Crescenzi) was a 13th-century horticulturist known for his famous writings on agriculture. Shaw was originally from Scotland and had much to do with lowering the duty on wine imported to England. His writing is informative and humorous. He mentions American wines and in a prophetic remark states, "California seems better adapted for producing wine."
