New York: Harper and Brothers 1899. (Hardcover) 46pp. Good to very good, no dust jacket. Pictorial cream cloth printed in five colors. Color illustrated endpapers and illustrated throughout in color. Printed on one side of the page and bi-folded for binding. The text block has been rebacked and skillfully remounted in the original covers, the first sheet before the half-title has been lost. The pages are bright and clean. The cover is reasonably bright and clean with the following faults: there are some small slits on the spine where the cloth has weakened around the edges of the colored areas because of the stamping process, also there is a small spot on the spine and a small paint stain on the back cover near the bottom corner. This is a massive, custom three-quarter leather bound volume of 169 issues of "THE YOUTH'S COMPANION" newspaper/magazine from the 1850's. Although the label on the front cover states "1852-1855," one issue from 1850 is included. "A Family Paper, Devoted to Piety, Morality, Brotherly Love - No Sectarianism, No Controversy." The Youth's Companion was a weekly magazine/newspaper published by Nathaniel Willis in Boston from 1827 to 1929. Each issue contains 4 pages and features an engraving on the first page. There can hardly be found a name or pseudonym so synonymous with nursery rhymes as Mother Goose. This charming 19th-century pictorial collection of the classic children's work was composed by James William Elliot, with song lyrics by M.L. Elliot. Each song includes a delightful corresponding woodcut vignette. These illustrations are by a variety of artists under the supervision of the esteemed English engravers, the Brothers Dalziel, George, and Edward.

Original dark green cloth front cover, showing Toad, Ratty and Mole, all in gilt, bound in at rear. ----- The thirty eighth edition overall, this is the first to feature the wonderful drawings by Shepard which haven't been out of print since. After his drawings for the A. A. Milne Pooh books, these are Shepard's most enduring, & endearing, illustrations.

Illustrated with 8 beautiful full page colour plates, each with a printed tissue guard, 104 line drawings throughout the text, plus illustrated endpapers at the front and back, all by Charles Robinson. Small bookseller label to the bottom of the front free endpaper. A fine and spotless copy of the book in publishers dark green cloth binding with gilt illustrations and lettering to the front board and spine. In the rare original illustrated dustwrapper, printed in red and green on beige paper. The red ink on the spine is faded and there are a couple of very small chips but overall this is a very smart example of the wrapper on a truly fine book. This first American edition uses sheets from the English edition, prnited by Ballantyne and Company in London. An uncommon survivor in such lovely condition.
