Stapled wraps, 8 1/2 x 11, Manilla card covers. 22 pages. Good. RARE. This is a pre-publication, first appearance, of "Woman Sitting at the Machine, Thinking... and Other Poems". It includes a section of the title poem not included in its later (1990) publication. The other poems in the collection are: "Doing What Comes Unnatural"(on not-choosing to be a lesbian); "No Storm So Rough You Don't Wake In memory of Mary Brodine, September 20, 1981"; "Door to Door"; and a "Letter to Meridel LeSueur January, 1981". Included with the 1984 publication, is a first edition of the the 1990 Red Letter Press printing. It includes a preface by LeSueur and an introduction by Merle Woo, who's landmark race, sex and political ideology discrimination suit (1982-84) against UC/Berkeley Karen helped to win. The Red Letter Press edition ends with an essay in memory of Karen by Janet Sutherland and a compendium of her writings. "She was a radical poet and a poetic radical...a revolutionary artist and an artistic revolutionary...a feminist thinker and a thinking woman..." Karen earned her livelihood typesetting from 1975 to 1986, folding intense experiences in her work into her great poem "Woman Sitting at the Machine, Thinking". Karen grew from her experiences and work to become a socialist feminist and a national leader in Radical Women and the Freedom Socialist Party (FSP). She co-founded the Woman Writers Union in San Francisco in the early 70's; was founding co-editor of the Kelsey Street Press and an editor at the Berkeley Poets Co-op". In San Francisco, she was Radical Women Organizer from 1979-1981, and FSP Organizer from 1981-1983; from 1982 on, she served on the FSP National Committee. Description:
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some rubbing and light edge-wear to the covers. Afterword by Janet Sutherland. Book design by Helen Gilbert. Cover design by Eve Anthony. Activist/poet Brodine's final book, published posthumously by leftwing publishers Red Letter (their ad insert gives a fascinating glimpse at early 1990s radical publishing aesthetics). Includes a preface by proletarian literature icon Meridel Le Sueur and an intro by Merle Woo, the embattled UC Berkeley professor whose defense committee Brodine helped coordinate. Brodine's cultural impact looms large: she was an editor at both Kelsey Street Press and the Berkeley Poets Co-op, and was featured at Mainstream Exiles: A Lesbian and Gay Men's Cultural Festival in 1980 at San Francisco's Valencia Tool & Die. 104 pp. Poetry.

The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows

It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions…
