Correspondence between the poet and his skin doctor (cummings had a longtime problem with his hands that proved a major distraction psychologically and a significant obstacle to his creative output), the Viennese intellectual Richard Hoffman (1893-1963), a Cambridge area dermatologist who was worldly and well-read, on friendly terms with Hesse, Mann, Wilhelm Reich, Peter Altenberg and many other European artists and authors. The doctor-patient relationship soon evolves into a friendship, and the cummings' hands share equal space with comments on writers, art, politics and history. There are a good number of carbon copies of Hoffman's letters to cummings, plus his medical notes on cummings' skin condition and the prescribed treatments. Many letters are accompanied by their original envelopes. A full and detailed catalog can be had on request. Over 100 separate pieces, some of cummings' letters quite detailed and animated, with his wordplay and linguistic brilliance on full display.
