1880 Novels of Benjamin Disraeli Vivian Grey Lothair Sybil Tancred 10v SET

"There are three types of lies -- lies, damn lies, and statistics."

– Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield

Benjamin Disraeli was a 19th-century British writer most famous today for the bitter hatred between himself and his political rival William Gladstone. He enjoyed the favor of Queen Victoria, who shared his dislike of Gladstone. His literary career was greatly overshadowed by his parliamentary ambitions but includes both romances and political novels.

While his works were overshadowed by his political controversies, he did write a number of novels which are included in this ten-volume set of the works of Disraeli. Notable works found in this set include:

· Vivian Grey

· Venetia

· Lothair

· Sybil

· The Young Duke

· Tancred

· Henrietta Temple

Maximilien Misson was a 17th-century French traveler best-known for his voyage through Italy in 1688. Following his tour, Misson published a fascinating account of his travels which, according to Spence, became "the standard travel guide to Italy for the following fifty years". This first volume from the 1698 edition includes illustrations and descriptions of custom and culture in Nuremburg, ancient Roman weapons and armor, view of Piazza San Marco in Venice, the Rialto Bridge, Venetian gondolas, the Bucentaure barges, Venetian Doge and nobles, Notre Dame de Lorette, and many others.

v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
