THE YEAR THE YANKEES LOST THE PENNANT (DAMN YANKEES) (In The Original WRAPAROUND BAND and Inscribed By the Producer Of The Broadway Play)

by Wallop, Douglass

Condition: Fine/Fine

New York: W. W. Norton, 1954. Wallop, Douglass. THE YEAR THE YANKEES LOST THE PENNANT. New York: W.W. Norton, (1954). First Edition. A FINE Copy (one tiny scratch to the front board) in a FINE and remarkably bright priced Dust Jacket (rare thus because the Yellow color of the dustwrapper usually fades to white just by staring at it too long). This particular copy also comes complete with the ORIGINAL WRAPAROUND BAND advertising the upcoming 1955 Broadway play "Damn Yankees" and which features a photo of Gwen Verdon wearing not much more than a baseball jersey and high heels. This original band (age-toned at the spine but complete) is exceedingly scarce. Furthermore it is BOLDLY INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper in black ink: "I produced/ this book/ on Broadway as 'Damn Yankees'/Frederick Brisson. Really, if you're looking for THE copy of this film source for the 1958 baseball-meets-Faust film "Damn Yankees" starring Tab Hunter, Gwen Verdon and Ray Walston, stunningly choreographed by Bob Fosse, music by Adler and Ross, this is it. Frederick Brisson also produced The Pajama Game and Under The Yum Yum Tree; however he is probably best known to the glitterati for being the longtime husband of Rosalind Russell (a successful marriage of thirty-five years, she died in his arms). It is hard to imagine a better opportunity to own the best copy of an iconic "Literature into Broadway musical into Successful Film" cornerstone. Fine copy, Fine DJ, exceedingly rare Wrap Band, inscribed by the Producer. .. Signed. First Edition. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Willard Mullin.

Decades after it became a hit movie and musical--"Damn Yankees"--this classic baseball fable, restored to its original title, is being introduced to a new generation.
