At head of title: "Supreme Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania. July 1847, No. 40." William M. Kennedy claimed that his property running from Maiden St. to the adjacent wharf in the Kensington District of the Northern Liberties (at the time not part of the city of Philadelphia) included half of the street and the wharf itself. Elihu Duplessis Tarr (d. 1851) and John Meredith Read (1797-1874) represented Samuel Tucker Bodine (1810-1879) and the commissioners and residents of Kensington, offering the history of the property back to the orignal 1689 grant to Michael Neilson and through its ownership by William Masters and his descendants to show that both the street and the wharf had been public property. Hardcovers bound in tan buckram with spine titles on black fields. Moderate wear to the bindings, which have some smudge marks on the spines and covers. A sound set. Each volume comes with a thick paperback Supplement inserted at the rear (bound with this in mind; the binding allows for the inserts which are about 200 pages a piece). Volume I bears the imprint date of 1957. Volume II is 1959. Volume III is 1960. And Volume IV is 1961. The Index is for Volumes 200 to 254. The Index is only 4 volumes itself. Scarce.

Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, with added inscription noting that he died in January, 1978. The author's obituary from the Evening Bulletin is taped to the front fixed endpaper. With 2 pieces of photocopied correspondence from John B. Hannum to Margaret Hileman, daughter of Leo H. McKay, thanking her for the gift of this book (one taped to the half title page, the other loose). John B. Hannum (1915-2007) was a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1969 to 1991. Leo H. McKay was a judge on the Court of Common Pleas of Mercer County, Pa., from 1954 to 1968. In this book, he discusses 12 trials of particular interest during his time on that bench. Scarce. Title page lists printer but no publisher. Marbled endpapers split at hinges and thus a little shaken, but holding well. Red boards embossed with bright gilt title to front. Short title handwritten to spine. Boards rather worn and dulled to edges and spine. This is a charity sale on behalf of Friends Of Morston Church (reg.1099831). 12mo. 157pp + extensive unpaginated index.

Rare 1st edition, 2nd printing copy of this classic work. Ex-library with some stamps and markings. Some color fade on top edges of book, but otherwise good with clean unmarked text - except for two markings on page 19 (see picture). Comes with original dust jacket in acceptable condition - significant edge wear and fade - see pictures.

Dustjacket in overall Very Good minus condition, two enclosed rips along the seam of the front panel, spine end extremities chipped, top spine is chipped, light overall aging; looks very good in brodart protective sleeve. The dustjacket is printing on low quality paper, it's nice to find one in any condition. "Ellington Air Force Base; Ground Safety Deps; Dec. 1953" is penned in lead based ink on the ffep and grounds the history on this piece. One lead based ink dot that bleeds through page 47 to 48, top edge lightly toned, else pages are clean & unmarked. No date of publication. Information in the publication goes up to 1858. Lawyer and judge Garrick Mallery (1784-1866) served in the Pennsylvania legislature from 1827 to 1830 and was chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means when the Bank of Pennsylvania was rechartered in 1830. He was the father of Garrick Mallery (1831-1894), an ethnologist who specialized in Native American sign language. This publication relating to the demise of the Bank of Pennsylvania during the financial panic of 1857-1858 is very scarce. In Very Good- Condition: disbound; last leaf is detached but present; foxing, heavy on pp. 19-20; otherwise, clean and tight.
