Leaves towards the rear are slightly softer towards the centre of the outer edge, having been affected by damp at some point in the past. Final leaf more heavily affected. Tissue repairs to tears to the final leaf. Dated 1542 to the colophon. Rebound in modern full leather by Temple Bindery - light creasing to the lettering label. A couple of worm holes to the title page. Some other occasional worming to the margins. Ink owner's name to the foot of the title page. Titled Balbus in old ink to the lower edge of the text block. All edges gilt. A fine copy with some wear to corners and joins of binding; a few scattered underscorings and marginalia in an early hand. Quarto (25x16cm) original blind-stamped vellum with central embossed image of Christ surrounded by female images titled SPES, spine on 4 cords (spine splitting but well held by cords, vellum very darkened). Title page with ownership inscription (? Daniel Bower) dated 1698, [664] leaves ([par]8 A-FFff8 4G4 HHhh-NNnn8 OOoo4), last page blank. Marginal numbers, not column numeration, are probably references to the unabridged Stephanus Thesaurus. *Abridged edition of Henri Estienne's Thesaurus Graecae linguae, compiled by Johann Scapula. The printer Guillaume Laimarie was active in Geneva 1578-1598.

Some worming to endpages and back cover sligtly stained. Overall text in good condition, highly readable. Some minor folding to bottom corners, little impact on text. *First published in Florence during the supremacy of Savanarola in 1497.

This used paperback book is in very good condition. The pages are clean and neat. The binding is tight. The boards are clean inside and out.

Vellum grubby, spine label barely readable, diagonal closed tear to spine above the spine label, no front free endpaper, sound text block, both pastedowns have chips or tears, pages generally clean with some minor dampstaining mainly to the top edges of a dozen or so pages toward the middle, very old ink doodles on the final blank and lower margin below the colophon, minor finger soil. A piracy may have been published in the same year. Estienne woodcut device on title (a philosopher standing at the foot of the Tree of Knowledge, and the motto "noli altum sapere.") The idea for this book stemmed from a conversation between the printer, Henri Estienne, who was known for his erudition, and King Henri III, the dedicatee. The King had asked why Italy, rather than France, claimed the most and best Ciceronian Latinists. Latin text printed in italic. The title page shows some mild spotting; a faint monogram is also written in an old hand on either side of the printer’s device. Interior pages are clean and crisp. Bound in early 19th century straight grained red morocco with spots of rubbing to the extremities. The outer joints are professionally strengthened. The upper corner tip to the front cover is neatly patched. All edges are gilt.
