Description:
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. First edition, first issue with "Published May 1936" on the copyright page of the author's classic novel. Octavo, original gray cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the title page in the year of publication, "To Virginia Morris, my room mate at Smith College, my friend for many years With love Peggy Margaret Mitchell Atlanta, GA Dec. 14, 1936." Mitchell and Morris lodged together at 10 Henshaw Avenue, a college approved boardinghouse, where Mitchell was one of its most vibrant and engaging tenants. During her tenure there, Mitchell was already offering colorful discourses on the Civil War, its conflicts seeming to possess her more than "the current unpleasantness in Europe." After finishing her freshman year at Smith, and following the death of her mother, Mitchell went back to Atlanta to take over the household for her father and never returned to Smith College. Black and white photograph of the members of Mitchell's freshmen class at Smith… Read more

Description:
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. First edition of the author's classic novel. Octavo, original gray cloth. Signed by Margaret Mitchell on the front free end paper. First printing, with "Published May 1936" on the copyright page and no mention of other printings. First issue dust jacket, with Gone with the Wind listed in the second column of the booklist on the back panel, with $3.00 cost on the front flap. Near fine in the original dust jacket with some light professional restoration to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very nice example. In 1923, Margaret Mitchell became a feature writer for the Atlanta Journal, and in 1925, married John Marsh, a public relations officer for Georgia Power. She found most of her assignments unfulfilling, and she soon left to try writing fiction more to her own taste. Her own harshest critic, she would not try to get her work published. She began to write Gone with the Wind in 1926, while recovering from an automobile accident.… Read more

Description:
1939. Signed. MITCHELL, Margaret. Autograph letter signed. New Orleans, April 1, 1939. Two leaves of hotel stationery, each 7-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches, writing on rectos only. $11,000.Very rare autograph letter signed from Margaret Mitchell to Harold Latham, who had famously discovered her and her book, about traveling incognito and possibly meeting. Written seven months before the Gone With the Wind premiere.Harold S. Latham, an editor at Macmillan, famously pried the manuscript of Gone With the Wind away from Mitchell on a visit to Atlanta in 1935. On a tour of the South to find new writers, Latham received reports that Mitchell had a manuscript, a fact she repeatedly denied. Then she admitted that although there was a manuscript, it was unfinished. Finally, on the eve of Latham's departure, Mitchell showed up at his hotel with the entire manuscript—a pile of papers so large Latham needed to buy an extra suitcase to be able to carry it with him on the train. Although she regretted the action… Read more

Description:
New York: Macmillan, 1936. 1st Edition. Leather bound. First printing with May 1936 on copyright page. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Mitchell has signed this work on the front endpaper. This book has been finely rebound in deluxe full green morocco leather. Covers are paneled in gilt; spine ornately decorated with gilt motifs and fine raised bands; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers. The cloth from the original boards is bound in at the rear. Fine condition with only one barely noticable touch of rubbing to the back cover. Text clean and unmarked, binding firm and tight. THE RARE TRUE FIRST EDITION OF THE DEFINITIVE NOVEL OF THE CIVIL WAR. The original first printing from May 1936 was published in a small number; no one expected the book to become one of the best-selling and most beloved works in American literature. Signed copies are especially rare as Mitchell refused to sign copies once the book became popular. A SPLENDED EXAMPLE OF THIS CLASSIC NOVEL, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR IN A GORGEOUS LEATHER BINDING.

Description:
In a one-page letter dated March 3 1937, Mitchell writes Lewis B. Traver of the American Booksellers Association, thanking him for the paperweight award (”Mr. George Brett [of her publishing house, Macmillan] has forwarded to me...) and noting that “...the trophy will never be used for any such utilitarian purpose as that of holding down papers...[I’ve] placed it under the framed record of my Grandfather Mitchell’s services in the Confederate army...” Signed in ink “Margaret Mitchell.” The second letter, dated March 11, 1937, two pages, over 500 words of exceptional content. While declining to attend the Association’s banquet primarily because she expected “...the moving picture people to come here to Georgia around that date. I hasten to disclaim any connection with the forthcoming movie production of “Gone with The Wind,” as I sold the book outright and am not working on the film in any capacity...While I have nothing to do with the casting, costuming et cetera, of course I… Read more

("Margaret") in black fountain pen ink, on personal letterhead, Atlanta, May 3, 1939. 4to, 3 separate pages. To Mable and Edwin [Granberry]: " We have been in one of our hurricanes. It all started when Selznick at last announced Miss Vivien Leigh and things are just now quieting down." She then goes on to ponder an invitation to Long Beach, New York. On page two she comments on that year’s Pulitzer Prize-winner: "Of course, you know about Marjorie Rawlings getting the Pulitzer award. There never was much doubt that she would get it if there was any justice anywhere.I do not know whether the award will keep her too busy to make this trip. The members of the Atlanta Women’s Press Club have asked me to give a party for her should she come, as they are all anxious to meet her." Mitchell closes with mention of the book which made her famous: "I was interested in your remarks about finding a GWTW mention in an article written by a Chinese. I did not see the… Read more
