PRIVATELY PRINTED FIRST EDITION THUS. "From the poverty and obscurity in which I was born, and in which I passed my earliest years, I have raised myself to a state of affluence and some degree of celebrity in the world. As my constant good fortune has accompanied me even to an advanced period of my life, my posterity will perhaps be desirous of learning the means, which I employed, and which, thanks to Providence, so well succeeded with me." (From a 1771 letter addressed from Benjamin to his son William.) An important work in early Americana.

Clean, tight and VG in its dark-green cloth, with bright gilt-rule and design to the front panel and bright gilt-lettering along the spine. Very light fraying at the spine base, otherwise clean as could be. 16mo, 264 pgs., top-edge gilt.

Green publisher's cloth, gilt publisher's device to front cover; extremities slightly rubbed. Uncut. First edition of the first Lakeside Classic. Even today, Donnelley still produces these modest and dignified books.

Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1903. First thus. Very good+ in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt borders on the front board and gilt text on the spine. Much of the gilt on the top edge of the text block has been destroyed by silverfish and there are two tiny chips to the cloth at the head of the spine and light rubbing to the cloth at the heel of the spine. The gilt text on the spine and gilt logo and borders on the front board are very bright and clean. 264 pages of text illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Benjamin Franklin from an earlier work of art. This is the first Lakeside Classic which was issued at Christmas time in 1903 and is rather uncommon. There are no prior ownership markings of any kind within this copy.

Near fine in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt borders on the front board, gilt text on the spine with only hints of rubbing at the lower corners of the heel of the spine and with the top edge of the text block gilt. The contents are clean, tight and free of any prior ownership markings of any kind. There is what may be a partial, one inch dampness stain on the front board with only become apparent with the front board is manipulated just right in relation to the light. This is the first Lakeside Classic which was issued at Christmas time in 1903 and is quite uncommon. Without doubt, this is one of the nicest copies of this title I have seen! The gilt text on the spine and front board is clean, crisp and free of any tarnish.
