Cincinnati, Ohio: Robert Clarke and Co, 1887. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Good Only. A satire or Science Fiction/Fantasy? Who's to say. The protagonist is Dr. Paulus Androcydes, "a modern physician much engulfed int he history and mystery of Egypt..." has found a strange papyrus. His pet cat Anubis, a constant companion, by some potent charm evolved from the papyrus, is somehow transformed into Athothis, a chief physician, astrologer of an early period in Egyptian history. Athothis, in gratitude for his release from physical death, shows Dr. Androcydes the "true inwardness" of modern medicine, comparting our modern practices...with those of his age." Navy blue cloth-covered boards with lovely gilt design of the pyramids, the setting sun, the Sphinx, and a camel driver. Edgewear and one corner bumped. Received great reviews. Extremely scarce.

New York: Ace Books, 1968. Second Printing. Mass Market Paperback (MMPB). Near Fine. Ruth Robbins. The first in this masterfully creative author's "Earthsea" trilogy. Appears unread -- no evidence of read-crease to spine. Just a very tiny bit of shelfwear to very edges and corner of card cover. Small sticker to top right of front panel. Fabulous cover art by Ruth Robbins. Clean, tight, bright. Rare in this condition. "A haunting tale of a proud, lonely boy striving to understand all there is to know. He uses his powers unwisely and too soon, opening a gateway into the land of the dead, and summoning up his own Death, which, abroad in the land of the living, seeks to consume him. Ultimately he must meet Death and face it. A Wizard of Earthsea is a major work of fantasy." (Quote from Amazing Stories on back of book).
