Charles Kingsley’s absorbing adventure novel based upon the life of swashbuckling privateer Amyas Preston, who in 1595 joined forces with George Somers to capture Caracas, Venezuela during the Anglo-Spanish War. First published in 1855, the book was an instant success, and by 1897 had reportedly been reprinted thirty-eight times.
