Description:
S.S. Comayagua, , 1959; Five menus from a voyage on the Merchant Marine freighter "Comayagua" March, 1959. Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The first"Comayagua" was launched in 1921 at Newburgh Shipyard, N.Y. for Cuyamel Fruit Co., but in May of 1942 was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-125 while on a voyage from Guatemala to Cuba. A new "Comayagua" was rebuilt and re-christened in 1946 and placed in service as an intracoastal refrigerated cargo ship for United Fruit Co. In years past a popular and inexpensive way to travel was to book passage as a civilian on a Merchant Marine vessel bound for any number of ports of call. A common misconception of the uninitiated was that the food on such ships was unappealing, whereas in point of fact the menus on Merchant Marine vessels rivaled those of the best restaurants, and crews and passengers ate quite extravagantly. All menus 5" x 8," printed on stiff card stock. All in excellent condition,… Read More
