Views evolved towards fascism in the 1930s. Bonnard was one of the ministers of National Education under the Vichy regime, for which he was expelled from the Academie Francaise, tried and convicted to 10 years in prison. Woodstock, VT: James Barrett, ND.. Autograph letter by the Hon. James Barrett (1814 -1900), Vermont lawyer and politician who served as Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court and President of the Vermont State Senate, recommending General Stephen Thomas for the office of pension agent for the state of Vermont. Undated, but mentions "the recent war," so most likely 1865 -1880. (The letter gives the place of origin as Woodstock, which Barrett left after 1880.) Letter has been folded, and retains a strong vertical crease, but is in Very Good condition; the paper is only slightly age-toned and has not deteriorated along the folds.

Washington, DC: A.J. Boyer, 1913.. ALS by Boyer concerning remarks made by Boyer about Joaquin Miller, the "poet of the Sierra." (The society was instrumental in preserving the Miller cabin in Washington, DC.) Written in ink on a single sheet torn from a notebook, with ragged right edge. Approximately 5-1/2 x 8-3/8 inches. Also present is the original mailing envelope, hand-addressed by Boyer. Letter is Fine; envelope is faded and soiled, with creases and small tears, Very Good.

Auvers, France: Paul Adolphe Rajon, 1885.. ALS by the 19th-century French engraver Paul Adolphe Rajon. On notepaper embossed "Auvers.Oise et Loire" (town of his last residence). Written in black ink and signed in pencil "Rajon." 3-7/8 x 6-3/8 inches.

Baldock, UK: Reginald L. Hines, 1963.. Very nice handwritten letter from English historian Reginald L. Hines to an unknown recipient, remembering a recent visit and sending along one of his books. Dated "20.IX.1963." Hines is best known for his histories of Hitchin, in Hertfordshire, where he lived, and for Confessions of an Un-common Attorney. One sheet of writing paper, folded once horizontally. Very Good.
