Washington: Smithsonian Institution, 1939. Octavo. 18 pages, illustrated. The Two Medicine Formation in northwestern Montana has had one of the most remarkable findings of dinosaurs and other important fossils from the Campanian stage. Charles W. Gilmore was a major American paleontologist whose papers were written primarily while in the employ of the National Museum of Natural History. This is one of his most scarce papers his work in the late 1930's after his last expedition to the Two Medicine Formation. This copy is from the library of William H. Carr, a curator of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City Museum from 1919-1944, his name is stamped on the front wrap. Also, below Carr's name there is another stamped name of Botanist William H. Brown (1884-1939) who was Director of the Philippines Bureau of Science, 1924-1933, and then a lecturer in botany at Johns Hopkins University, 1934-1939. Staple bound in very good condition.

A major study of the Hopi Traditional Movement that is among the most intense studies within the tribe made in the late 1970's and still used today for insight into the ancient myths and the power structure of the BAE imposed on Hopi culture. Bound in tan stiff paper wraps lettered in black. A lovely, near fine copy.

Dr. Frances Gillmor in the English Department was better known as the specialist at the University of Arizona on Mexican art and culture but she was a good friend of the Publisher of the University of Kentucky Press, Jerry Crouch who had been her student. He begins by sending her a 2 ALS 32 line message on Christmas card hand printed in exquisite calligraphic hand of a forthcoming book on the California Gold Rush but how it caused him to recall of her appreciation of their book Green Mount and the Fleets. He also speaks of De Arriaga's work on Peru which they are publishing but they are waiting for a dust jacket blurb which he will be writing soon. On his 4ALS letter about the book he speaks of the editing, the marking, the stapling, and the pasted together at early stages of the printing. This is an eloquent description of an editor's work. It is the most definitive encyclopedia of what we mean by money from the Yap stone money to the beaver skins in early 19th century America. There was cartridge money in Ethiopia and a multitude of other forms. Fascinating and essential for both those interested with money and the anthropologist historian who wonders at the varieites of what people exchange for survival. The Hohokam is an archaeologically defined culture, the "heart- land" of which is thought to have been around Phoenix (radiating northward to the Mogollon Rim and southward into northern Mexico). They are best known for their impressive, system of irrigation canals, remnants of which have survived into the growth of modern Phoenix. This book uses an interdisciplinary research involving the natural sciences (for example, botany, geomorphology, zoology, and palynology), whereas, most of the earlier histories relied on questionable historical accounts and early attempts at archeaology. This work remains one of the essential items on understanding what has been uncovered relating to Hohokam culture. A remarkably fine bright copy bound in blue leather like cloth, spine lettering gilt, in a bpine pictorial dust jacket.

Heizer and Mills have demonstrated here that when archaeology and history are interwoven, we often find a much deeper benefit than to see the subjects within each discipline in a narrow sense. Here they deal with the early (perhaps primitive) approaches to the materials and then integrates the descriptions of Hezeta, Bodega y Quadra, and Vancouver to great benefit. What began as a small study shows a much wider view of west Indians. Bound in light brown cloth lettered in red, spine lettering red. A very good copy which leans just a bit in unclipped pictorial dust jacket with a bit of wear along the upper edge.

When this book was written, Donald Marshall, an anthropologist, had heard that the erotic practcies on the Island of Ra'ivavae were once well-known but suppressed because of missionary influence. Here he was able to finally get an elderly informant to tell of the regular practice of 'amurepo (cunnilingus) though earlier it was called honehone. Her grandmother had a clitoris as long as the first two joints of her finger. She describes in detail the ways in which the sexual organs were lengthened from early youth. Pa-kika when a woman with an enlarged clitoris mounts another and many other terms that the missionaries had gotten them to suppress. The religion is described in detail as well as the family structure.

London: Norgate, 1879. Octavo. xxxii, 320 pages. The author was a legendary antiquary whose scholarship gave us the word "folklore". He wrote on the origins of the duties, privileges and ranks of nobility, and he was the friend as well as an influence on Charles Dickens and many of the accomplished writers and scholars in England. It was his econoclastic treatise here on Human Longevity which raised a storm since he challenged what many had believed as authentic ases of those who lived well beyond a hundred years. He said that they were extremely rare (though in the 21st century through medicine, it has become far more common.
