Description:
Los Angeles: ABAA, Southern California Chapter, 1957. Quarto. Contains "The First Bookseller to Enrich My life" by J. Frank Dobie. One of the most moving accounts of discovering books and booksellers especially Elijah Leroy Shettles, professional gambler, converted to Methodist preacher and always a bookseller who know more about rare pamphlets and books than his contemporaries. The accounts of well-known rarities and their discovery will thrill both collector and bookseller. Although Dobie was not a churchman, the devout Rev. Shettles wanted Dobie to deliver the funeral message because he wanted truth not the typical pious talk that the average minister was often given to. [McVickers C 410. p. 1-2.].

New York; (1928): Row, Peterson & Company. First Edition. Octavo. xi [I], 687, xxxvi pp. illustrated by Dorothy Handsaker in color and in black and white, with maps. Dorothy Sloan's copy had bumped corners and lacked the publisher's letter to Dobie. This copy has Dobie's ownership signature on the front fly leaf and the following letter to Dobie from the publisher on their letterhead: "Mr. J. Frank Dobie, Austin, Texas. Dear Sir, You may know someone who is interested in the enclosed form letter we are sending out. If so, will you please hand it to them? No doubt you heard that 'the Growth of a Nation' was adopted for Texas a few weeks ago. We are certainly indebted to you for the assistance you gave us. That Dallas News review made a favorable impression all over Texas. With best wishes, I am, very cordially yours, Paul W. Barnett, Texas Representative, Row, Peterson and Co." Dobie's review calls this textbook "the first history of the United States in which that part of the country west of the…
