Description:
Quarto. 5 pages, typed original.Unlike the Tiajuana Bibles (also called 8 page literatures), this very graphic description of a man and woman in the throngs of passion is suprisingly literate though not with the excellence of a Robert Frost in poetry though indicating a good knowledge of vocabulary; nevertheless, it is a remarkable description of copulation. Judging from the paper, typescript and language it would appear to have been written in the early half of the 20th Century. His use of the word "pussie" [sic] is an archaic spelling found only in the OED 1790 by A. Tait. It would seem his use of the term marriage was intended for protection against morals police since clearly in the larger part of the 20th century this would have been considered pornographic and could not be sent through the mails. He does use the forbidden "c" word twice but has a sufficiently wide choice of words to describe sexual relations in a reasonably literary fashion. We do not know the author but judge the item to be of… Read More

Paris: for the Author and His Friends, 1902. Limitd Edition. Octavo. Limited to 375 copies. The present copy is unnumbered. 227 pages. The hunger for erotica was strong while the forces in power in late 19th century England and America attempted to prevent the sale of literature that dealt openly with sex. Besides the more scandelous items printed underground such as Fanny Hill, My Secret Life, and others on sexual proclivities, he also notes works on flagellation and details some of the more prominent French titles. Bound in paper covered boards, spine had been taped with old clear tape, paper spine label, spine ends chipped. A good copy.

Tokyo: Asoka Shobo, 1953. Octavo. Book 2, 195 pages, illustrations, some in color, some folding and with one folding color wood block print used as frontispiece. Japanse Lanaguage. [Suzuki] Harunobu (1724-1770) was a Japanese designer of beautiful woodblock prints in the Ukiyo-e style. He was also the originator of the polychrome print. A handsome copy in original slipcase and shipping box. With the end of the American Military Occupation of Japan in 1952, the Japanese culture including their interest in an honest view of the erotic could easily be distributed. Here is a very nice example of a scarce item which shows the work of Suzuki Harunobu. Bound in white pictorial paper covered boards, spine lettering black, near fine with just a hint of toning to edges.

London; New York: Erotica Biblion Society, 1932. Small Octavo. Frontispiece, 134 pages. The Erotica Biblion Society were published in Victorian London by Leonard Smithers and Henry Sidney Nichols in small printings or limited editions to allow the seller to know they would shortly be moderately scarce. This book begins with a drugged virgin who is defiled by the malevolent Valentine St. Giraud who was a rake like most of the characters in this volume. Unlike most of the American editions, these were often more literary (among the unknown authors of the Society are Aubrey Beardsley, Arthur Symons, and Oscar Wilde as well as lesser known figures such as Vincent O'Sullivan who was a better writer (John Cooper Powys' listed him as one of the top 100) and also known for his decadence which he shared in his early years with Oscar Wilde. There are six very erotic illustrations.(our picture is covered).

[London]: The Casanova Society, 1925. Limited Edition. Quarto. . Limited to 1000 copies. The present copy is #262. 311 pages translated by Francis Macnamara. Originally published in 1829 when he was 30 years old preceding his 96 novels. This was a satire on marital infidelity as was common in his period of French history but what is interesting is how he considered women's considerations so important for the marriage, he writes: "if her mind has not entirely destroyed by your having kept her in a state of ignorance, you will find...it is still possible for you to be feel drawn to one another from time to time." Bound on 1/4 brown cloth over blue paper covered boards, blue paper spine label lettered in black. A very good copy with just a few spots of rubbing or soiling. Extra spine label laid in.

A number of these images are on the erotic side which was typical of those not devoted to fashion. This was near the end of the art deco era. Description:
1939. Photograph of Sally Rand's famous "Nude ranch [facsimile signature] was housed inside the fairgrounds at the Golden Gate International Exhibition at a club called The Music Box. she supposedly would perform in the buff but when she was challenged in court cases, she claimed there are audience never saw a thing because "the Rand is quicker than the eye" often leaving judges laughing (or frowning). Although she had been arrested at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair on the same charge, she had found the middle ground between absolute nudity and the illusion of being naked. Most collections lack this copy. The Bancroft Library has one picture of the girls standing before a fence. The Pennsylvania State University has four pictures but the photos are different. It is possible this is the only one not found in any of the standard libraries or museums. She was born as Harriet Beck and known originally as Billy Beck but Cecil B. DeMille created the name "Sally Rand" for her.
