1967. 1tls, plus she has signed a musical line from her version of "My Cup Runneth Over". Written by her to Harrie W. Johnson who collected autograph signatures, composers and lyricists which already numbered over 1,000 by the late 1930's. Here she writes a nice note to Harrie and adds a note that she is adding a musical quote of the melody and writes she is singing it as she writes. The quote comes from: I Do! I Do! (a David Merrick play that she and Robert Preston performed from December 1966 to October 1967. She adds a delightful P.S. "One of the reasons "my cup runneth over with love" is You!" The one bar musical line measures 2 5/8" x 5 9/16". Typed on the Mary Martin letterhead measuring 5 7/8" x 7

New York; (1914): G. Schirmer. Octavo. Fourth Edition. 176 pages, index, musical scores. A marvelous study of the range and uniqueness of African American music that arose in the slave period. In the chapter, Variations from the Major Scale, states the adjustments with the flat seven in the major and major seventh cannot be fully captured in standard musical notation. He noted variations in the throat and what he calls a "curious rhythmic effect" created something extraordinarily unique. There are also two chapters on the black Creole culture. A very nice copy of a musical scholars attempts to capture the uniqueness of the African American sound which whites could not quite master in his observations. A very nice inscription: "to George Alperts, many thanks, never B#, Never Bb; just B natural [symbol] all the best Milt "Judy's" Hinton with sketch of bass and dated 89. With a foreword by Dan Morgenstern. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographic images. Hinton was considered the "Dean of bas players" and experienced the jazz world firsthand for more than five decades. He was a member of Cab Calloway's orchestra for sixteen years. He played with most of the jhazz greats of this century including Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billy Holiday and several other of the jazz greats. `A near fine copy bound in red cloth, spine lettering black, in a very good pictorial dust jacket with one small closed tear and chip to rear panel.

The need for a comprehensive description of Beethoven's sketchbooks finally is met with his massive book which is not only represents an essential reference work for the Musicologist but is of value to a serious beginning scholar on the subject. Here are included works feared lost in World War II but discovered in Poland in 1977. General Index and an index of works and location of manuscripts. Appendices A & B deal with the watermarks of the principal papers. A fine copy bound in brown cloth, spine lettering gilt, in fine dust jacket.

Deaccessioned, previous owner stamp to bottom corner of itle pages, bound in tan buckram ruled and lettered in black, a bit of finger soiling to bindings. A very good, clean set.

Consisting of standard, popular and copyright songs, selected with the especial view of being used in domestic circles and private parties. 362pp. bound in full black polished calf, spine decorated in gilt, morocco spine label gilt but fading, marbled endpapers, a couple of spots to title page, while lacking rear free endpaper, it is however, a charming little book.

. 8" x 10" sepia photograph of Eddie Rosenwald who in 1939 began playing the Vega Electric Violin. The Boston listeners to the radio program enjoyed the sound and it soon became a popular instrument to add to sound recordings. Eddie Rosenwald influenced Scotty MacLean to use it in his playing at the Hotel Victoria in New York. Soon a number of Jazz musicians used it and by the late 1960's Pape John Creach and Doug Kershaw were using it in live and recorded performances.

Malan conducted hundreds of hours of interviews to provide wonderful insights and marvelous stories of an amazing violin legend beginning with his life in the Ukraine and his career in the U.S. His friends included Einstein, Gershwin, Horowitz, Edna St. Vincet Millay, Harpo Marx and the great Russian composers such as Rachmaninoff, Toscanini and Rimskey-Korsakov.

With all the latest records, listing players and songs. Illustrated by b&w photographs of all the hottest players in 1945, as well as rare prints of all-but-forgotten bands. Bound in blue cloth boards, with black title on spine and front cover (moderate shelf wear to extremeies, with worn bottom corners). Good.

Boston: L.C. Page and Co, 1899. First Edition. Small Octavo. unopened. 383 pages, index. pages 367-373 have a chronology of famous violinist. The chapter on Pagani is very fascinating as is the chapter "Women as Violinists". There are photo-engravings of 10 of the most well known including: Pagaini, Corelli, Ysaye, Franz Kneisel and the remarkable woman violinist Maud Powell who was the first woman violinist from America to achieve worldwide fame. A very nice copy bound in green cloth elaborately decorated in a pictorial gilt and repeated on spine, top edge gilt all others uncut. light wear to spine ends, previous owner's name. Nice.

Np/np/nd(ca.1996). Limited Edition. Folio (6" x 6"). Limited to 65 copies. The present copy is number 33 signed by the illustrator Jennie R. Freidman and with a signed one-page folded note dated May 24, 1998, to an unnamed recipient about "finally getting this book off" to them. Dar Williams, a music, and song writer began playing the guitar at age nine and wrote her first song two years later. Early in her music career, she opened for Joan Baez, and later sang a duet with her. She recorded her first full album, The Honesty Room, under her own label, Burning Field Music. Colophon: Dar's voice and lyrics float through many cars, home, studio, and soul, it makes my insides burn to have had the chance to work with her. This book was born at a show on Martha's Vineyard at the Wintertide Coffeehouse in February of 1995, and fittingly finished one year later in February of 1996. The story of an ancient maple tree that eventually became the center of a violin culture. Otis Omas is not only a violin maker and fiddle player but he has provided beautiful color pictures of the workshop, the students with their instruments, and the musical themes that they have interpreted. A CD in the back of their work is included. Bound in gray paper covered boards backed in black cloth, spine lettering gilt. A fine bright copy in near fine pictorial dust jacket.

Ewing, New Jersey: Princeton Univ Pr, 1995. Octavo. 286p. index. This book has become scarce since it was produced in a small print run and essential for Opp. 127, 130, and 132. The analysis of what became five quartets were written in the same period as the Missa solemnis and the Ninth Symphony. John Deathridge writes: "a remarkable scholarly debut..[the author] deftly recaptures the initial bewilderment of Prince Galitzin, the patron who commissioned them." An essential work on these quartets but also the wider context of the Ninth and the Missa Solemnis.

New York: Herschel Fenton. Quarto. 8 pages, double folded, not recorded in OCLC. Herschel Fenton was a violinist who was given a Strativarius in 1878 and went into the music business selling both instruments and publishing sheet music. Since this price list is undated (but numbered as No. 3), it seems to fall into the circa 1880 period. While he was famous initially for selling find old violins [he offered a Strativarius at $7,000], p.4, violin bows, military instruments, etc. but he was a pioneer in selling electric banjos which today are also highly collected. Some creasing or small edge tears.

Honolulu(1902 But Reprinted 1945): Ka Papa Hawaii. Oblong 12 Mo. 285p. Hawaiian Language. Reprinted in 1945 as the congregation of the Kawaiaa'o Church was now filled with servicemen who loved the old hymns which here were often sung in Hawaiian and English. It was at one time the national church of the Hawaiian Kingdom and this was its hymnal based on the selections of the Hawaiian Evangelical Association, includes the section He Buke No Ka Paepae ana i Ka Huhan O Ke Anaina Hoomana--page [233]-285. Some are such passages as I Korineto 13 which discusses faith, hope and love, Epeso 6:10-17 which presents the Christian's armor. Pasted in the front endpaper is the Hawaiian words to Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah [E kai oe, e Iehova, I kou ihini nei" Prefaces in English and Hawaiian. Originally property of the Kawaiahao Church, this older version still has survived in good condition with original black cloth cover.

Emma Thursby was one of the first American singers to achieve renown in Europe, and one o the few native New York women to ain distinction in music. The author while he knew nothing about music he had met her in 1928 and became friends until her death at 83 in 1931. He had the honor of writing about her life. Bound in rust cloth lettered and ruled in gilt, spine lettering gilt, Marbled endpapers,faint dampstain to upper edge 378-379, and rear free endpaper. A very good copy.
