Description:
Each of the four original postcards were never mailed which because of their size (10 3/4" x 3 1/2") would not have survived postal handling. The Harwood Photo Service was in Medford, Oregon in 1925 and lasted until 1933 though these photographs would have been taken circa 1925-1930) [see Rogue Valley Photographers website]. The costs of travel made the photographs of sites in Oregon and California unprofitable so he devoted himself first to family photographs and then commercial work in and around Medford. An advertisement in the Central Point American, April 12, 1934 reveals he sold his photo equipment to Mr. Ray Anders as he prepared to move to Santa Cruz, California to retire.

4 pages (five with overwriting on page 3). Edward Pickering had just graduate from Harvard and became a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later made the Harvard College Observatory known and became a leading writer on astronomy and after questioning Niels Bohr on atomic structure, he became convinced of Bohr's theories. He is writing to his friend Conwell who was classmate from the Lawrence Scientific School. He writes of his collection of photographs of bridges, he notes he has over 100 stereoscopic views from Europe (courtesy of Anthon in New York), He notes a Professor E. is interested in the project. He inquires about the bridge at St. Paul over the Mississippi as well as the Railroad Bridge, notes the one destroyed by weather, notes the Bangor Bridge in Maine with nice description, says class he is teaching has twenty promising young men, a very nice letter. Later this fascination with photography led to his method to photograph the spectra of multiple stars by putting a… Read More

Description:
. M.B. Marcell of Oregon was the photographer who had already photographed the 1911 Pendleton Round up. He was famous for taking images of the horse both at his success and also of those shots as the horse dislodged him. He came in 1914 to take images of the Miles City Round-Up which was becoming the premier event of the period just before World War I. The event was so popular that the local newspapers blamed the loss of the baseball team in two games due to three players who were rodeo participants who at least temporarily forsook the team. The four photograph images with details etched in white on the postcard with each identified as being by Marcell and Miles City round Up 1914 are: (1) Unloading Time (as cowboy is thrown from bronco); (2) Spinning Horse (with cowboy holding cloth to his face); (3) Ben Ford on Moose Bay [his number 53 is plainly seen on photo]; and (4) Good Night I'm Gone (as cowboy is being thrown to ground]. A very nice collection from what was one of the great rodeo events… Read More

Description:
A pristine stereographic card taken by Daniel Francis Mitchell who photographed Arizona views for sale from 1877. Mitchell also was in partnership with Baer and remained active in the territory until at least 1883. Accompanied with an envelope from the War Department Headquarers of Arizona addressed to Major A.J. McGonnigle, Chief Quartermaster, [Fort] Whipple, postmarked March 16, 1885. This was a turbulent time since on July 13 he had to report to the Quartermaster General of the U.S. about Samuel Drachman's failure at Fort Huachuca where what the latter did amounted to taking kickbacks of more than $40 on each 100 pounds of hay. Eventually, Drachman was only sued for $475 but it was a blot on his record. Of course, it should be noted that the parade of quartermasters at Fort Whipple were accused of the same thing such as declaring weapons obsolete and then selling them to the local Prescott merchants. This charge was never proved and since the Fort was considered essential in suppressing… Read More

Description:
1927. An 8" x 10" vintage movie photograph of Babe Ruth and his co-star Anna Q. Nilsson in the now lost film "Babe Comes Home". The photograph has attached the information from the Movie Company First National Pictures, Inc. with a short summary of the story. First National found this film was a huge hit at the box office. It was filmed at the Los Angeles Wrigley Field (then a minor league stadium) owned by William K. Wrigley and later films made there included The Pride of the Yankees, The Stratton Story, and Damn Yankees. The film was made in the spring of 1927 with co-star Anna Quirentia Nilsson who also was the first Swedish actress to receive her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What makes this especially scarce is the attached label which gives added provenance to a very rare Babe Ruth photograph.
