Description:
Leiden; (1993): E.J. Brill. First Edition. Thick Large Octavo. xi, 706 pages. Three main issues underlie the volume's approach: the meaning of anticlericalism as a historical concept and development over time. The word "anticlericalism" originated in the nineteenth century as a description for lay resistance to the political power of the clergy, but the anachronistic application of the concept to the conditions of early modern Europe has obscured the variety of anticlerical expressions that existed in practice. Perhaps the volume 's most basic contribution is to acquaint its readers with the diversity of anticlerical feeling in the historical sources. Besides Susan C. Karant-Nunn's work on Clerical Anticlericalism in the Early German Reformation, the work of the late Donald Weinstein on Italian anticlericalism demonstrates how extensive the term could be applied. His colleague whose "Anticlericalism as an Agent of Change" remains the essential beginning place to grasp the concept. The List of… Read More

Description:
London: Privately Printed for the Navarre Society, 1923. Limited Edition. Quarto. Large paper deluxe edition limited to only 150 sets signed by the publisher and printer. One of the finest sets of the complete writings of Montaigne every produced. The type-setting was done by hand at Edinburgh's Riverside Press using Arnold's hand-made paper, specially made and watermarked by the Navarre Society. What sets Montaigne aside from the early classics of the Early Modern period was that his search for truth led him to constantly challenge his own mind. While he had read both the Greek and Roman classics as well as those of the Renaissance, his vistas were the wide world looking beyond the limits of society, religion, and art to ideas that seem remarkably modern to today's reader. Harold Bloom reflecting at the end of his life on the great writers, he had Shakespeare, Montaigne, Cervantes, and Dante noting that it was their search for truth that gave us the greatest sense of freedom. A very nice set in the… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan & Co, 1892. Octavo. 410 pages. (2) pp. ads. Extra illustrated edition. Besides the 53 illustrations in most editions, this copy is extra-illustrated with 20 additional plates with Giotto, Fra Angelico, Cimabue, Masolino, Fra Lippi and others. The author is now considered one of the finest women writers of the era. Though she was free from much of the conventions tolerated by many women writers, she wrote with intelligence about Florence and society that was detached from her societal connections. However, when she read Hardy's Jude the Obscure, she found it too gross and wrote a review attacking it. This brought her into disfavor at the time. In retrospect, her writing reflects marvelous insights into Florence often overlooked by the traditional tourist. Bound in 1/4 white cloth over maroon cloth centrally stamped in gilt, spine lettered red within gilt ruled frames, light wear to corners and spine ends, spine soiled, some rubbing to rear board, top edge gilt, previous owner's gift… Read More

Description:
Portland, Maine: Thomas B. Mosher, 1912. Limited Edition. Small Octavo. xi, 304 pages. Limited to 700 copies. Walter Pater provided a rich view of the art, literature and philosophy of the Renaissance. He argued that the rich iconography rooted in Greek sculpture was more fully developed there than when first produced. He gives attention not only to Sandro Botticelli and Luca della Robbia and Michelangelo but also Pico della Mirandola. Originally the work was published under the title: Studies in the history of the Renaissance but as critics noted his profound insights were almost entirely in the art and culture of the era. A fine bright copy bound in light green paper covered baords, raised bands, spepr spine label lettered in red and black, housed in green cloth chemise and slipcase.

Description:
Oxford; (2022): Published for the British Academy By Oxford University Press. First Edition. Octavo. 288 pages, index. The most important book on the Italian Renaissance since Wallace K. Ferguson's The Renaissance in Historical Thought (1948). While most scholars in the past 50 years have either dismissed the Burkhardian concept of the Renaissance or rejected it entirely in favor of the broad "Early Modern Europe" label, this work has nearly a dozen major scholars from Robert Black's "The State as a Work of Art" who like each of the scholars has used the theme Ad Fontes to go to the sources along with the early work of Burckhardt which should cause the "Renaissance Deniers" to reconsider their earlier thinking. Other scholars who have contributed to this work are; Mikkel Mangold, Martin A. Ruehl, Virginia Cox, Wietse de Boer, Barbara von Reibnitz, William Stenhouse, Joan-Pau Rubies, Giuseppe Marcocci, Helen Watanable-O'Kelly, Nicholas Terpstra, and Stefan Bauer. Bound in glossy pictorial paper… Read More

Description:
London, Nd(1921): Priv. Print. For The Navarre Society Limited. Octavo. Vol. I, 474 pages, Vol. II, 462 pages. illustrated by W. Heath Robinson, 1872-1944 . Gargantua and Pantagruel is a satire ridiculing the educational and religious establishment of his day. W. Heath Robinson had already become one of the finest illustrators of books including his own Bill the Minder (1912), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1914) and this fine edition of Rabelais (1921). The English translation was begun by Sir Thomas Urquart and finished by Pierre Motteau. They attempted to be delicate but besides sex, Rabelais often deals with the problems of the removal of bodies wastes. He states that excrement and Piss (or the lack thereof) keep the Physician with patients. The Typography and printing of this book was extraordinary. One of the finest productions of the Navarre Society bound in three-quarter red Morocco over salmon cloth, raised bands gilt, title gilt within one compartment, others decoratively stamped in gilt, top… Read More
