Three main issues underlie the volume's approach: the meaning of anticlericalism as a historical concept and development over time. The word "anticlericalism" originated in the nineteenth century as a description for lay resistance to the political power of the clergy, but the anachronistic application of the concept to the conditions of early modern Europe has obscured the variety of anticlerical expressions that existed in practice. One of the finest sets of the complete writings of Montaigne every produced. The type-setting was done by hand at Edinburgh's Riverside Press using Arnold's hand-made paper, specially made and watermarked by the Navarre Society. What sets Montaigne aside from the early classics of the Early Modern period was that his search for truth led him to constantly challenge his own mind. While he had read both the Greek and Roman classics as well as those of the Renaissance, his vistas were the wide world looking beyond the limits of society, religion, and art to ideas that seem remarkably modern to today's reader. Though she was free from much of the conventions tolerated by many women writers, she wrote with intelligence about Florence and society that was detached from her societal connections. However, when she read Hardy's Jude the Obscure, she found it too gross and wrote a review attacking it. This brought her into disfavor at the time. Portland, Maine: Thomas B. Mosher, 1912. Limited Edition. Small Octavo. xi, 304 pages. Limited to 700 copies. Walter Pater provided a rich view of the art, literature and philosophy of the Renaissance. He argued that the rich iconography rooted in Greek sculpture was more fully developed there than when first produced. He gives attention not only to Sandro Botticelli and Luca della Robbia and Michelangelo but also Pico della Mirandola. Originally the work was published under the title: Studies in the history of the Renaissance but as critics noted his profound insights were almost entirely in the art and culture of the era. A fine bright copy bound in light green paper covered baords, raised bands, spepr spine label lettered in red and black, housed in green cloth chemise and slipcase.

Ferguson's The Renaissance in Historical Thought (1948). While most scholars in the past 50 years have either dismissed the Burkhardian concept of the Renaissance or rejected it entirely in favor of the broad "Early Modern Europe" label, this work has nearly a dozen major scholars from Robert Black's "The State as a Work of Art" who like each of the scholars has used the theme Ad Fontes to go to the sources along with the early work of Burckhardt which should cause the "Renaissance Deniers" to reconsider their earlier thinking. Gargantua and Pantagruel is a satire ridiculing the educational and religious establishment of his day. W. Heath Robinson had already become one of the finest illustrators of books including his own Bill the Minder (1912), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1914) and this fine edition of Rabelais (1921). The English translation was begun by Sir Thomas Urquart and finished by Pierre Motteau. They attempted to be delicate but besides sex, Rabelais often deals with the problems of the removal of bodies wastes. He states that excrement and Piss (or the lack thereof) keep the Physician with patients. The Typography and printing of this book was extraordinary.
