Description:
London: Printed for, and Under the Direction of John Bell, British Library, 1787. First Edition. 12mo. Two works in one volume, 146 and 110 pages Samuel Johnson announced his intention to edit Shakespeare's plays with his associate George Steevens. He considered no first rate work had understood Macbeth so he began by letting the scholarly world know he intended to write specifically on that work in what would be his careful observations on Macbeth and King Henry. Steevens provided most of the textual work, with Johnson contributing an additional eighty notes. This major work was published posthumously in 1787. It is one of the early studies of Macbeth by the scholar whom Harold Bloom wrote: "Samuel Johnson still seems to me first among all Western literary critics." The publisher John Bell whom the Folger Library said was a bibliographic nightmare. He is credited with having discontinued the long 's'. A good working copy bound in half leather over marbled boards rear joint fragile but holding well,…

Description:
London; 1797 and 1799: Printed for Thomas Egerton. Octavo. In two volumes, 628pp. and 654[2]pp. errata. These two volumes are among the several dozen major contributions to the issues of Shakespeare forgeries. George Chalmers speculated that the sonnets were addressed to Queen Elizabeth in an emulation of Spenser. He rejects the conclusions of Malone and Steevens that they could be addressed to a man.The latter volume contains an errata leaf of five lines plus errata for pp. 389, 395, 402, 413, 419, 430, 434, 438 and 446. A major contribution on the Shakepearean documents forged by W.H. Ireland. The Monthly Review NS 31 (February 1800), p. 187 disagreed. George Steevens in writing to Thomas Percy strongly disagreed. These two volumes are fundamental to the study of Ireland and his influence continued well into the early 19th century. Chalmers defends Elizabeth I as the beloved and able to show the "certainties" of Malone's gendering are unfounded. Randal McLeod in his Formation, the Sexing of…

Description:
London; Dated 1805 But (ca.1870): For Thomas Goddard. Small Octavo. Two frontispiece's (1 folding), 317pp., (17)pp. index, 3 other folding plates, and a 2 page typed letter bound in after page 312 which is basically a minor biographical note about Ireland by J.R. Smith, in which he cites Bibliotheca Cantiana. This copy, like the Huntington's appears to be a deceptive facsimile or forgery of the original 1805 edition. It has a frontispiece facsimile of a forged seal and a facsimile of a forged and genuine signatures of William Shakespeare. The titlepage is a reproduction of the 1805, but lacks the price at the foot. The typesetting has signature mark "B2" with "B" under "to" and "2" under "a" while the 1805 edition has "B2" centered under "a". The inclusion of the extra 3 folded leaves of facsimiles, along with typesetting similarities resemble the 1874 edition published in New York by James W. Buton but lacking the introduction and preface (Pages xxi, (7). The Huntington concludes that this places…

London: Martin Secker, 1912. Limited Edition. Octavo. 3 volume set, volumes mostly unopened, with 3 frontispieces, limited to 1,000 copies. In the Last of the De Mullins, produced by the Stage Society in December 1908 and published in 1909, Hankin's merciless realism went even further than before in telling the story of a 'new woman' opposed by her family because she chooses to earn her own living. He told the critics: "It is the task of the dramatists to present life does not argue with it." Text is printed on laid paper and represents one of the nicer examples performed by a trade publisher. Bound in beige cloth decoratively ruled in gilt, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, some darkening to spines and finger soiling to covers, a few corners bumped. A very good set.

London; 1783 and 1784: Printed for the Author. Octavo. . Vols. 1: Portrait frontispiece, xxiv, 451(1)pp. errata and with subscriber's list. dated 1784. Vol. 2: 425pp. dated 1783. Vol 3: 508pp, dated 1784. The subscriber's list in Vol. I has listed Dr. [Samuel] Johnson, James Boswell, Dr. [Benj.] Franklin, Samuel Ireland (The Forger), Mrs. Siddons, and several others as subscribers. Davies writes that Shakespeare is the toast and honor to the English stage...he presents men to us as they really existed and such as they are to our common nature." While Davies was a fine actor, he did not take criticism well, so left the stage to become a bookseller (a decision Dr. Johnson lamented). It was in the back of Davies bookshop that James Boswell first met Johnson (DNB). Bound in contemporary calf, rebacked, red and green contrasting spine labels gilt, board edges and corners worn, some light scattered foxing, lacks half-titles. A good set. [ESTC T90854].

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1807. First Editions. Octavo. In two volumes: xv, 526pp and 499pp. (1)pp. errata. wood-engraved illustrations by J. Berryman . A beautiful set of the first edition with Douce's classic study with all nine original illustrations. One of the most influential works on Shakespeare criticism that deals with the controversial issues such as the king's two bodies in Hamlet (an issue that seemed too difficult that it led John Gielgud to leave it out when he produced the play). Douce consulted Florio for a full understanding of the Italian influence on the Bard's ideas. He also took the phrase from The Taming of the Shrew "lead apes in Hell" as a view held by males that old maids had unfilled lives as a conventional misunderstanding. Marginal damp staining to first two leaves of volume 1. light scattered foxing to first two leaves of volume 2, bound in a modern polished calf trimmed in gilt, raised bands, lettering gilt, endpapers renewed, Vol. 2 with a few plates…

London: Henry Colburn and Co, 1827. Octavo. In two volumes, xxvii, (1) p. errata, 382pp. and xii, 394pp. One of the most remarkable portrayers of Lady Macbeth, but in a cross-gender role she was known for a powerful presentation of Hamlet. She was painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence at least fourteen times over the next 22 years.[44] The last of these, an 1804 full-length portrait, is on display at Tate Britain. Sir Joshua Reynolds painted his famous portrait, Mrs. Siddons as the Tragic Muse, in 1784. He told her that he had signed it on the hem of her dress because he had "resolved to go down to posterity on the hem of your garment." It now hangs at The Huntington in San Marino, California. A 1785 portrait by Thomas Gainsborough is displayed in London's National Gallery. London; Nd(ca.1920): C. Arthur Pearson. Small Quarto. In three volumes: 745 (1)pp.; 770(1)pp. and 815(1)pp. Illustrated by Sir John Gilbert and engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. One of the loveliest 19th century editions of Shakespeare in the original cloth which usually had to be rebound but here is beautifully preserved save for the corners which show a bit of wear. This set was edited by the renowned chess master, Howard Staunton. Today most devotees of chess whether beginners or international masters know it is his design that dominates all serious chess but while on the way to establishing himself as a likely world chess champion, his failing health could not take the stress from tournament play. He began to concentrate on Shakespeare, producing a photolithographic reproduction of Much Ado About Nothing in 1866 and a lovely first folio edition in 1866. Beginning in 1872 he began his series Unsuspected Corruptions of Shakespeare's Plays. It is, of course, these 3 volumes which were beautifully…
