Description:
1907. Cloth. Very good overall. 101 vernacular snapshots capturing a 1907 family tour to San Francisco (after the earthquake), Catalina Island, beaches, ostrich farm, Redwood National Park, El Capitan, Yosemite Park, Four Corners, Mesa Verde National Park, Pikes Peak Cog Railway, and Tijuana, Mexico. The first two images are of the San Francisco post earthquake views, wonderful images of street scenes showing much activity with the devastation behind. These are followed by the beach and Cliff Hotel. The family traveled with their 9 (?) year old son no doubt showing him the West while he was young. There are no captions but most of the shots are of recognizable views. Oblong 8vo, 10.5 x 7 inches, Ward's brand album, green cloth covers with 50 thick grey pages mostly containing 2 silver bromide snap shots, making the total count 101 images. Images are predominantly 4.25 x 2.5 inches. Some insect damage to the covers and some rubbing on the corners; still a delightful, sound album.

Description:
Paris, 1779. Maps. Very good condition. A map of comparative cartography of the West coast of North America, from the Straits of Anian to Cabo San Lucas and the southern tip of Baja California. Extracted from two maps, reportedly done by Vischer in 1612 and 1641, with information derived from earlier mapmakers. Both maps showing the fictitious Strait of Anian at the top; it was part of the legendary Northwest Passage, the long hoped for link of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, whose existence many explorers attempted to prove, and which James Cook challenged in his third voyage of 1778. The smaller inset map shows much more of the Strait, along with an open sea, making a suggestion of a Northwest Passage. The coastlines vary in both maps, with the smaller one listing important place names such as C. de San Francisco and los Farilones; while the larger shows the Bay of San Miguel (current day San Diego). The larger map showing a section of coast where the Sierra Nevada are drawn called "Nova Albion",…
