San Francisco: Adam Smart and Company, 1936. Paperback. Very good overall. A sweet illustrated, signed presentation copy of rhyming children's book by Alfred Sutro a.k.a. Adam Smart. Sutro (1869-1945), was a prominent San Francisco attorney, well-known book collector, and President of the Book Club of California. The charming illustrations are printed in a single color with the animals and scenery defined sometimes by the color, and also by the absence of color. It includes one of a kangaroo "Kangaroo," cried Missus Kangie, "Please cast off that painful grouch, All our baby kangaroosies Now are snuggled in my pouch." Other animals include bees, an owl, elephants, goats, tigers, and sheep. Germany, 1890. Very good condition. Charming children's picture blocks with color animal pictures. The chromolithographic illustrations mounted on wooden blocks, depicting various animals, including a kangaroo. Each animal block has descriptive text on the verso. The text for the kangaroo reads, "The Kangaroo comes from Australia. By the help of its tail and enormous hind legs it is able to escape by terrific bounds when pursued". With six columns and four rows, for a total of 24 animal blocks. The illustration of the dog is the German spitz; other animals include the antelope, camel, bison, duck, elephant, flamingo, goat, hippo, ibis, jaguar, lion, monkey, newt, ostrich, porcupine, quail, rhino, tiger, underwing moth, vulture, wolf and zebra. In the original box, with chromolithographic illustration of lions in front of a cave, and 'Germany' stamped at the lower right corner. Edges of box slightly rubbed, a few splits.

London: C. W. Faulkner & Co, 1902. Good + condition. A group of unrecorded playing cards illustrated by George Lambert, revered Australian artist who was an official artist for Australia in W.W.I. Lambert illustrated several sets of playing cards for Faulkner's company. His early signature appeared "G.L." and later "G. Lambert". According to the very fine website World of Playing Cards, Lambert's illustrations decorate the sets "Bargains" (c. 1900, signed "G.L."); "Nursery Rhymes Misfitz" (ca. 1900) unsigned, but with the same formatting of the title as these animal cards, printed in light gray, small caps, italics); an unknown titled set from Faulkner's Misfitz series, (c.1902); "Hurry-Up Misfitz" (ca. 1907), some of these cards are signed G.L. 1890. A children's natural history published in the US ca. 1890. 13 pages, string tied binding. Each page has numerous fine chromolithograph portraits of animals, including the kangaroo & the platypus, recorded as a "Mullingong". Arbuckles was a coffee brand-name in the US in the late 1800's and published a number of these finely printed albums in which they would include a promotional page on coffee, in this instant on the back cover. A highly collected series in America. Front wrapper foredge quite chipped, with the bottom edge ruffled and a closed tear & slt. stain at the top; 1st page has sml. corner chips. Otherwise good condition.
