Illustrated half title with wonderful chromolithograph of prospector working with a pickax along a stream, the illustration within an elaborate gilt and red patterned border, and additional engraved plates. Alice Haven (1827 - 1863) was an American writer and magazine editor who ran the Philadelphia magazine 'Neal's Saturday Gazette and Lady's Literary Museum', after the death of her husband. 12mo, 214pp, color half title, [2]pp advertisements. Original green gilt cloth, slightly rubbed at spine ends; light scattered fox spotting throughout. An inscription at the ffe, "Henry M. W. Eastman, from his Mother, Christmas 1863"

On Australia, "Some have supposed that this extensive region, when more thoroughly investigated, would be found to consist of two, three, or more vast islands, intersected by narrow seas. This however is not justified by the testimony of the latest voyagers. New Holland is evidently one mass of land... (p695). Thick 8vo, folding frontispiece map of Europe, 859pp. Folding map of Asia, folding map of Africa. Original calf, covers worn, spine perished, vertical crack, but holding. Internally pages somewhat toned, marked.

Magnificent photography by Jean-Louis Nou of this important Buddhist holy site in Java, in this encyclopedic work which examines Borodudur's historical background, architecture and symbolism. Large folio, 347pp printed on thick artist paper. This volume is bound in white cloth and has clean and crisp pages with no marks. There is an ink presentation written at the top of half title page. Pictorial dj with slight nick top edge.

Dj is fine, like new; internally immaculate.

Thick 4to, 236 pp, teg, a wide margin copy. With vignette title page, frontispiece portrait, map, 78 full page steel engravings, woodcut engravings in text by W. H. Bartlett. Internally, many plates foxed at margins, but the text is clean - likely a result of the paper used for the plates. OCLC: 253227387. Three quarter black gilt morocco and dark green buckram, with gilt title and ornate gilt decorated raised bands.

Account of Frances Milton Trollope (mother of writer Anthony Trollope) of her 1827 trip to America, including a visit to the utopian Tennessee community of Nashoba founded to educate & emancipate slaves, and her stay in Cincinnati. Richly colored hand colored lithograph highlighted with gum arabic, depicting a woman from the Greek island of Santorini in beautiful traditional garb, full trousers with flowing overskirts, full sleeved blouse and head scarf. From Deveria's 'Costumes historiques de ville ou de théâtre et travestissemens'. Achille Devéria (1800-1857), painter and illustrator. The plates in 'Costumes' were lithographed by Lemercier, Motte and Cattier, and represent Italian, Arab, Spanish, Swiss, Chinese, English, Russian, Belgian, French, Indian, German, Persian, and Greek subjects. Printed in the upper left corner is the number 109. Engraved by Cattier. 10 x 15 1/2"

The first French edition appeared in 1696 and was updated and added to for years afterwards; this an early Italian text version. The geographical portion is of special interest, having descriptions of New France and Florida, California as an island and mention of Antarctica as well as the recently discovered lands of Australia. A fascinating uncut copy with original paper boards. With a double spread of captioned images of Aborigines, with white man in pith helmet at center (Col. Bailey most likely). The captions read "Three old men of Arunta Tribe", "Bark Gunyah, or aborigine shelter", "Aborigines of Central Australia" and "Making fire with sticks of wood". Photographic illustrations include kangaroos, Australian bush scenes, the emu, Sydney harbor, and large sea turtles. Advertising 'Col. Edward P. Bailey Expeditions and Tours. Personally conducted, or individual tours to the Antipodes'. The second part on England by Thomas Smith "De Republica Anglorum". Simmler (1530 - 1576) was a Swiss classicist and theologian, known for his works on Switzerland, especially 'De Helvetiorum Republica', which was the recognized as the central work on Swiss constitutional matters. He also wrote the first volume dedicated exclusively to the Swiss Alps. Thomas Smith (1513 - 1577) was an English diplomat, scholar and Member of Parliament who became Queen Elizabeth's secretary of state and one of her most trusted Protestant counselors.
