Description:
1950. Approximately 250 vernacular snap shots of American military life in Korea, mostly infantry divisions, during the Cold War period in which the Soviet trained North Korean army invaded South Korea. There are many snap shot portraits of individual soldiers (including one of Korean troops), a few with a caption on verso, as well as daily life on the base, military material (tanks, airplanes), artillery practice, and local landscapes and towns. Specific sites pictured include the Camp Walker post exchange, Second Infantry Division NCO Academy, and a sign post in town showing the way to the Taegu Military post. The album closes with shots of the troops on their way home from Korea, stopping in Japan. With a newspaper article tipped in at rear, "5th Regimental Combat Team, Taegu Korea", on the departure of the 5th RCT from Pusan to the US. The 5th RCT deployed to Korea on 25 July 1950 to reinforce the Eighth Army in the shrinking area of United Nations control called the Pusan Perimeter. It…

London: John Murray, 1924. First edition. Hardcover. Good + overall. The authors own story of military life during W.W.I, as prisoner of war and his subsequent escape, with his signed presentation to Richard Coke. Edward Keeling, 1883-1954, was an officer in the Indian Army Reserve during the First World War, during which time he was captured by Ottoman forces and his description of an Anatolian prisoner of war camp is brisk and stark, and there is a postscript in which he denounces British refusal to prosecute those responsible for the mistreatment of prisoners. He escaped, eventually ending up in Bolshevik Russia before serving in Egypt and Kurdistan. His later life was considerably more tranquil, and he died as Member of Parliament for leafy Twickenham. Description:
1900. Very good overall. Pen and ink caricature depicting a Chinese man held aloft by his pigtail by an Allied soldier, with the handwritten title above. The soldier, likely an American Marine, wears a uniform with jodhpurs. He grins at the much smaller and grimacing Chinese man, who hangs in the air dressed in a robe and dangling slippers. The Boxers were Chinese displaced by natural disasters and angered by the interference of the West through their opium trade and Christian missionaries. Eventually supported by the Qing government army, they proceeded to attack foreign settlements and Chinese Christians in Northern China, including in Tientsin. An alliance of foreign troops, including Russians, Japanese, Americans, British, French, Germans and Austrians was formed to protect their countrymen. The Allies were able, after a great struggle and approximately 800 casualties, to successfully repel the much larger force of Boxers and Chinese troops at the Battle of Tientsin on July 13-14, 1900.
