Newburgh, NY, 1836. Very good condition. A leather bound account book with entries beginning January 1, 1836; at year end Aaron Belknap had a very healthy balance at his local bank of $3,273.54. With a loosely inserted check for $6.25 made out to Whitcomb Tarbell, dated Jan 17th 1839, printed, signed by Aaron Belknap. With spindle puncture at center. The account book measures 4 1/2 x 7"; account title written in ink at front cover in contemporary hand. The village of Newburgh was incorporated in 1800. Located on the Hudson it expanded and became a major center of commerce from 1850 on. With a well developed transportation network, it was an important steamboat river stop and attracted many businesses whose ships engaged in international trade. Early Newburgh was even part of the whaling boom of the 1800s, and it was a ferry landing for coal brought from Pennsylvania. Albany: State of New York Conversation Department, 1938. Wraps. Good + condition. Early pamphlet on the Adirondacks, during the tenure of Lithgow Osborne, Commissioner. Osborne was deeply involved in conservation work in NY state, for example buying up fishing rights from private landowners in order to preserve a continuous stretch of river front for public fishing. As Commissioner of Conservation he helped to oppose private interests trying to weaken "forever wild" provisions of the Forest Preserve at the NY state constitutional convention of 1938. With large folding map titled, "Map Showing Highways, Public Campsites and Historic Sites in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains of the New York State Forest Preserve". Compiled by W. D. Mulholland, and dated 1937. A large fire prevention notice at upper left corner. 8vo, 42pp, b&w printed photographic illustrations. Printed paper wrappers, spine strengthened with extra strip of brown paper, wrappers chipped at edges.

Fine. Signed declaration of the appointment of Garrit H. Striker Esquire to the office of Lieutenant Colonel, by the then governor of the state of New York, DeWitt Clinton. Garrit Striker was the descendant of Dutch settlers (Strijker) in New York, who established a mansion at Striker's Bay. During the war of 1812 Striker served as Captain of the 4th Company in the 5th Regiment of Volunteers and worked on the fortifying of Bloomingdale Heights; he ultimately attained the rank of Major General. A Revolutionary War pay order made out to Captain Ezra Sperry (sic) for the sum of 60 pounds six shillings and eight pence for "sundry losses of cloathing (sic) & expense of sickness of his compy of Militia Expedition to N. York 1776 as pr acct and charge the state - Hartford. May 22nd, 1777". It is signed on the verso in full by Captain Speary, who writes, "May the 29th, 1777 received this order in full of Samuel [Hamilton?] as witness my hand, L60 - 6 -8, Ezra Speary". Signed below Speary's statement is Samuel [Hamilton? Horniston?]'s signature, and the docket in another hand, "No. 7506, Order, Capt Ezra Sperry, dated 22nd May 1777, L60 - 6- 8, audited 11th Sept 1777", signed E. [Ritkin?]." Np (Poughkeepsie, NY?), 1882. Pamphlet. Very good overall. In 1861, when Vassar was chartered, Lossing was appointed to the body corporate until his death in 1891. Lossing was a Dutchess County, NY native and became a prominent engraver, illustrator, and historian. He was a part owner and editor of the Poughkeepsie Telegraph. He authored over 40 books, most notably "The Hudson, From the Wilderness to the Sea" first published in 1862, which continues to be a key book on the Hudson River. Lge 12mo pamphlet, 21 pp. Maroon paper wrappers with gilt type (oxidized), slightly rubbed on edges, back page has embossed stamp for the Lindmark's Book Shop, Poughkeepsie, NY.
