New York, 1860. Public Auction broadside for the sale of the Charles Cornwall farm. Featuring a large map showing the four parcels, extending from Newtown & North Hempstead Flank Road at the north, and Flushing and Jamaica Plank Road to the west, with captions indicating that Flushing is 1 1/2 miles to the north and Jamaica 2 1/2 miles to the south. Lot No. 1 is 65 acres and bounded by Garretson and Rowland property; Lot No. 2, 20 acres; Lot No. 3 20 acres; Lot No. 4, 70 acres. Lot No. 4 also indicates a house, granary, barn and carriage house. Auction date of Thursday, June 28th, 18[loss of text], probably 1860 as there was a Thursday June 28th in that year. Charles P. New York: Peter DeBraun & Co. Hardcover. Good + overall. A great resource for businesses and dwellings in Long Island in the early twentieth century. Two volumes, "Northern Portion" and "Southern Portion" of insurance rates, with each town's property owner and type of dwelling named, from dwellings through saloons, boarding houses, barns, hardware stores, confectionaries, tinsmiths, tailors, stables, wagon repairing, and more. The Northern Portion volume includes the towns of Bayville, Brookville, Glen Cove, Manhasset, Old Westbury and Woodbury; the Southern Portion volume includes the towns of Baldwin through to Wreck Lead. Each page has also updated with the change supplements printed in strips and laid down, right up through 1911. Volume II Southern Portion also includes notations in the margins. 16mo, black cloth covered stiff boards with paper title labels at front covers. Volume II inner hinges split, a few page edges ruffled.

New York, 1846. Very good condition. A one page letter from R. McClellan addressed to Mr. Jordan regarding 'Geo Robinson' . "Hudson July 29th 1846 Mr. Jordan, Sir/Frequent complaints have been made to me that Geo Robinson washes his beer barrels in the street opposite his Brewery, and that noxious fluid runs down the street to the annoyance of his neighbors - producing a very disagreeable smell and at this season (?) making it unhealthy - These complaints have been so frequent, that I have directed a suit agt. him under article 3 (?) 43 of ordinance - and I direct you to appear as the corporation attorney. James Dick the scrivener will process the testimony for you - Mr. R. has been spoken to frequently, and pays no regard to the matter. Yours &c R. McClellan Inclosed 2 Rev. New York, 1842. Addressed from "New York House of Rep.ys. Feby 21st 1842". The writer appeals to Townsend to modify a bill supporting the "Society for the Reformation of Juvenile Delinquents". He says that theaters have long acted as safe havens for wayward youth, and wishes to continue as such, which the bill, he suggests, impairs. He gives several examples: "It is only a few days since a Boy - the son of an Albany City Marshall was sent us having been guilty of stealing some 7 or 9 dollar! And this for the purpose of enabling (sic) him to attend a theatrical exhibition - and a Girl of our City borrowed 10 Dollars in her Aunts name for the purpose of giving to the Theater ..." Riverhead, New York, 1885. Hardcover. Very good condition. The original manuscript title to a very large tract of land near Brookhaven Long Island acquired by John A. Bowman from the individual proprietors and conveyed here by Bowman in its entirety to the Long Island Improvement Company Ltd. The Long Island Improvement Company was formed by Austin Corbin, then president of the L. I. Rail Road and others in 1881. Corbin sought the land in order to develop expensive summer residences on Long Island; Bowman was acting as Corbin's agent in the acquisition of this valuable property. Austin Corbin (1827 - 1896) was an American railroad executive, plantation owner, resort operator, banker and robber baron. In Iowa, as a bank president, he engaged in mortgage scams. Later, through theft and corruption he consolidated the individual rail lines into the profitable Long Island Rail Road. At top an illustration of the Brooklyn Suspension Bridge (completed in 1883). Brown paper wrapper, 20 x 16.5", some wrinkles and fold lines, edges slt. ruffled yet clean and interesting image.

Pamphlet 8vo, printed paper wraps, 64pp with a large folding map. Covers dusty, spine worn, corners chipped. But a clean, uncut copy with a very good and large scale folding map of the West Point campus measuring 24 x 32"

A double page spread with two sides (4 page article) with wood engravings and printed photographs of the rigorous training and exercise required of the students of both West Point and Annapolis, from the Harper's Weekly, a long running American newspaper well-known for its wood-cut illustrations. Photographs feature: P. W. Davison, F. W. Smith; E. W. Clark; D. M. Michie; D. E. Aultman from USMA, and, M.E. Trench, W.K. Johnson, W. Bagley, C.F. Macklin, A.W.Catlin from the USNA. B & w illustrations show 'Wrestling on Horseback', a sail drill, gymnasium at Fort Severn, fencing, approximately 11 x 15 3/4", very clean.

New York, 1850. Very good overall. An interesting letter detailing the negotiation over wooden vs. iron railroad bridges. In this letter addressed to Strong, M. M. White, agent of the New York Iron Bridge Co., seeking to persuade the Vermont railroad to eschew a wooden bridge and setting out advantageous terms for purchasing an iron bridge. Strong was "liable as endorser on paper for the Rutland and Washington Railroad Company, which subsequently failed, to an amount considerable exceeding all his property." He was sued in the Supreme Court of Vermont lter in the 1850s and looks to have been bankrupted, losing his real estate, marble quarry share, etc. (See "Reports of Cases Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of Vermont, vol. 42, Montpelier Vt, 1870, by Wheelock Veazey, a Vermont Civil War hero. A History of the First Century of this Banking Association under its various Charters, published by its Board of Directors to commemorate the completion of One Hundred Years of its existence 1811 - 1911. Checks 6 1/4 x 2 3/4" cream paper, black text and ink, all with perforated stamp, toned. Brown stiff paper wraps, embossed title on front, small 8vo, 47pp, 9 plates b&w photo illustrations including 2 banknote portraits, corners bumped, otherwise fine.

Long Island NY presentation copy, from Fred Merrill, (Southampton), 1807, to his sister Sally Merrill. Small 8vo, xii, 338, Table of Contents [2]. Brown calf, gilt title at spine partially worn away. Covers rubbed, slightly marked, some chipping near top of spine; internally, normal degree of age toning.

Blank sheet provided by Jacob Ruppert Beer and Ale, with illustration of two steins, for restaurateurs to add menu. Besides owning a brewery, Jacob "Jake" Ruppert, Jr. (1867-1939) served in Congress and owned the New York Yankees. Ruppert and Tillinghast L'Hommedieu Huston acquired the Yankees in 1915 and purchased Babe Ruth from the Red Sox in 1919. Yankee Stadium became the largest seller of Ruppert beer in the country. He owned a large Hudson River estate in Garrison NY, now the home of St. Basil's Academy. 7 x 11"
