A marketing 'story' describing the Black Opal gem - its origins, cutting, mining, marketing and a poem, with beautiful color illustrations tipped in of extraordinary opal colors and shapes. Unusual, and not recorded on Trove. Pickslay & Co. was a jeweler based on Fifth Avenue of New York City. Charles Pickslay was born in England and moved to work with Theodore B. Starr, a company of silversmiths, where he got his start. Pickslay & Co. is described as 'an important but overlooked early 20th-century New York jeweler' by starcojewelers.com. Charles Pickslay is listed in Brooklyn City directories and U. S. Federal Census as a jeweler from 1870 to 1900. His obituary asks papers in Sheffield, England to copy the obituary. 6 1/4 x 3 3/8", 16pp, card covers, stapled and tied spine. Blue title and logo decoration on front, 2 color illustrations tipped in.

A detailed map focused on the area of the South Australian & Queensland border including the tracks of Charles Sturt (1845), Wills (1860, McKinlay (1861-2) and Hewitt (1862). Color lithographed map for Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen, 1867. Period outline colour marks the explorers tracks. 25x43 cm. Covers 138.5-141.5 degrees long. and 29-almost 25 degrees lat. Very interesting map with extensive annotations about the conditions found in the countryside. The Burke and Wills expedition established a Depot Camp on Cooper Creek at Camp LXV, (their sixty-fifth camp since leaving Melbourne), at a place now called The Dig Tree. There was a depot at the Dig Tree from 6 December 1860 to 21 April 1861. The Victorian Contingent Party under Alfred Howitt was sent by the Victorian government to establish the fate of the expedition. This black & white street scene shows Douglas Street as a long dirt road, with the church steeple in the far distance. The card is published by W. R. Moseley of Thursday Island. Addressed to someone in San Francisco, the message is written in German and dated 1926. Stamped, the cancellation for Townsville, with the date indistinct. This image not amongst the 40 postcards held in the most interesting postcard album held by the NLA (reference available on request). Corners a trifle rubbed but overall in very good condition.
