Description:
Tahiti, 1896. Very good overall. Five lovely albumen snap shots of Tahiti by an unidentified photographer, captioned in a period hand, with one showing the Brig 'Galilee' in the harbor of Papeete, under the command of Capt. Dinsmore. The brig was a very fast ship, built by the Matthew Turner shipyard in Benicia California in 1891, for the packet line between San Francisco and Tahiti carrying passengers, freight and mail. 'Galilee' set a record of 21 days for her return trip from Tahiti; in 1905 she was chartered by the Carnegie Institution and converted into a magnetic observatory, making voyages throughout the Pacific, including to New Zealand, and measuring Earth's magnetic field for 3 years. The 'Galilee' and Papeete are pictured here at exactly the time in which Paul Gaugin was living near the town and travelling there to participate in the social and political life of the French colony, contributing to a local anti colonial journal and editing and illustrating his own monthly publication.… Read More

London: Strahan & Cadell, 1773. Copper engraving , folded, printed on watermarked paper . Impression size 12 ins x 14 ins. The work of John Frederick Miller (fl.1759-1794), the artist was employed by Joseph Banks to make drawings of some of the specimens collected on Cook's first voyage to the Pacific in the Endeavour. This image appeared as plate 11 in the official account of Cook's first voyage, An Account of the Voyages..., London, 1773. In Chapter VIII on Otaheite (Tahiti) there is a long description of the discovery of the tree and the uses of its fruit: "it must be roasted before it is eaten, being fully divided into three or four parts...". William Bligh, who sailed with Cook on this first expedition, returned to Tahiti in 1787 as commander of the Bounty specifically to gather the breadfruit tree for cultivation in the West Indies. The condition is very good with the paper though folded being clean and crisp with a full margin. There is some light offsetting from the dark ink used in this… Read More

Description:
London: Gul. Bulmer, 1800. Hardcover. Otherwise very good condition. Two volumes of this rare set of the privately issued catalog of the private library of Sir Joseph Banks, of which only 250 copies were published. Volumes IV & V, of which the last volume is often missing from institutional sets. Volume 5 contains a list of works from the first four volumes indexed by author, as well as a supplementary list of those items that were acquired after the publication of the previous volumes. Taylor notes that the fifth volume (1800), is lacking in three of the nine sets he located. Jonas Carlsson Dryander (1748- 1810), Swedish botanist and librarian, served as Banks' librarian and curator of his collections from 1782 on at Banks' home in Dean Street, Soho. He succeeded Daniel Solander, a fellow Swede, in this role; Dryander later became librarian of the Royal Society and the first librarian and vice president of the Linnean Society. Dryander's crowning achievement was this catalog of Banks' private… Read More

Description:
London, 1803. The title is preceded by the phrase "To the Treasurer and Directors of the London Missionary Society, this print representing the Cession..." Black & white mezzotint, as issued. 29 1/2" by 23" with sml. margins. Includes the engraved title. London, January 1st, 1803. For the Benefit of the Missionary Society. A large separately-issued mezzotint by Bartolozzi after the original oil painting by Smirke which is held by the National Library of Australia. Laid down on linen, which nicely stabilizes some slight creases & small marginal tears, two of which affect the caption, one barely into the plate. One sml. hole repaired. Overall, the picture is very bright, with warm glowing shades of gray nuancing the gathering of missionaries. England was enamored with Omai, the first Polynesian native to visit London, who accompanied Capt. James Cook after his 2nd voyage. He was seen as a living example of the "noble savage". However, Omai returned to the South Pacific in 1776 without being converted… Read More
