Material on the rebellion in China and the instability of the Tartar dynasty, as well as the tea trade with China. Littell's Living Age was a magazine that comprised sophisticated selections from various British and American magazines and newspapers, a "Reader's Digest" of it's day. It was generally published on a weekly basis for almost a century, from 1844 to 1941. It was also often the first US publication of serialized stories by important mid-19th century authors such as Trollope. 8vo, approximately 800 pp, bound in original pebbled black morocco with brown boards, gilt title & decoration on raised bands. The commanding scene shows a trio of tea gatherers in the foreground at work in a large tea plantation, two additional tea gatherers in the middle ground near an elegant pavilion, and mountains in the distance. From Thornton's 'The Philosophy of Botany, Being Botanical and Philosophical Extracts'. 21 1/2 x 17 1/4" on paper with wide margins. Faint toning along the center crease, slight fox spotting along the top edge, outside the image.

A hand written letter on preprinted Memo paper from The Central China Press in Kewkiang (now known as Jiujiang), with reference to their booming business- "My dear Parents: Just a line - Lou continues to improve and will doubtless be able to stand trip home. There is still some mucous in discharge. Hope you are well and getting weller. We still enjoy Titus. Lou reads to me a little Sundays. Business is booming - All we can do. it looks as if we must enlarge soon - Coolie is waiting for mail. Goodbye - with love Ralph. We hear that a new Sup't is to be sent out from home." Kewkiang was at this time a port with proximity to the green tea growing districts. The major Western industries were shipping, insurance and missionaries. 8 1/8 x 5 1/2", cream paper with preprinted Memo To/From section at top in English and Chinese. Minor folds.

Advertising dated March 5th, 1851, from Lovell, Pomeroy & Co, New York City tea dealers, announcing they "beg leave to call the attention of all Merchants visiting the City, and especially large dealers, to their New Establishment, (and) inviting an examination of their Teas and prices". 2 sheets, 8 1/2 x 11", one illustrated at the top and printed in 2 columns; the other printed in a handwritten style. The announcement encloses a printed page titled "Growth and Curing of Teas". The printed page is illustrated with a scene of tea culture; two columns of text include information on the tea plant, mode of curing, names of teas, black tea, and green tea. With handwritten text at the verso: Tea & Coffee, Thomas LeGrand. Addressed to Mr. Charles Dautremont, Angelica, Allegany Co. NY, and with a 3 cent circular postage paid stamp. Very good. HKD 2700.
