Description:
West Point, 1844. A letter from a West Point cadet to his cousin asking for a loan, and hoping the the "flare-up" with Mexico was "all a hoax". Letter dated West Point Dec. 16 1844; cousin J. A. Hardie in West Point writes to James Thomson at No. 56 Cherry St. New York lamenting that "...I should not be so often obliged to trouble you, if the Paymaster would be obliging enough to pay me half my monthly due, at the end of the month, as is frequently done at other posts..." A postscript anxiously asks, "...Is the flare-up with Mexico all a hoax? I hope so." Our research indicates there was a J.A. Hardie enrolled at West Point at this time; the Mexican 'flare-up' resulted in war with the U.S. Approx. 7 3/4 x 9 3/4", each panel; only one side & a few lines on next page used; ink handwriting, very legible. Some edge chipping; in good condition. Interesting 19th century New York City & West Point social & military history ephemera.

Description:
Hubbell, Horatio. Arnold, or the Treason of West Point: A Tragedy, in Five Acts. Philadelphia (no pub.), 1847, 1st edition. Sml. 8vo, 3/4 maroon morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt, t.e.g., by Bradstreet's of London. 76pp. Rubbed along edges, 2 bookplates, but a very nice copy and an interesting specimen of an obscure American imprint bound by a venerable English firm. Despite the title, this wordy dramatization of events that occurred during the American War of Independence centers less on Benedict Arnold than on the romantic, unlucky Major Andre and concludes with his soliloquies. the play is thoroughly Shakespearean in its language, use of iambic pentameter, and frequent extended soliloquies. Little seems to be recorded of its author, who also produced a pamphlet on the state of affairs at Yale University in 1855 and an annotated edition of Euclid in 1861. One of the bookplates is that of Thomas Addis Emmet (1828-1919), an eminent American gynecologist, surgeon and physician, collector of… Read More

Description:
Newburgh, NY: Uriah C. Lewis, 1819. The published response by Cadet Thomas Ragland to his court martial and dismissal from West-Point in front of a Court of Inquiry, plus a Memorial to Congress. Ragland was accused of a mutiny or revolt against Sylvanus Thayer [1785 - 1872], the new Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy. Ragland and a small core of other cadets protested against the harsh treatment of a cadet by an officer. Their protest was squelched and Thayer's discipline was sustained as written by the William Wirt, Attorney General of the United States. Thayer's new rules for discipline, high academic standards, and military curriculum transformed the school into the institution that we know of today. 8x5", unbound, 24pp; 9pp, varies from OCLC: 38692125 (at 10 libraries) by 24pp, then 3-9p.

Description:
New York: Charles B. Richardson, 1860. Hardcover. Very good overall. With a compelling period presentation inscription from James Carson Brevoort to a Dr. Kingsley appears on page 7 of the Introductory Remarks. It reads, "No. 14 containing the tours through the southern states, is in the possession of the son of Chief Justice Marshall of Virginia. No. 13 was presented to the late Henry Brevoort of New York by the Chief Justice in 1816 and is now in the possession of his son, James Carson Brevoort, who begs that Dr. Kingsley will kindly accept this printed copy of the mementos of a good man. Brooklyn, NY, March 23, 1874." The 13th diary covers the dates 21 Nov. - 31 Dec. 1767 and is numbered "Regents' #13" in the LOC census and notes it as "Missing or not kept".  The inscription from Brevoort to Kingsley clearly indicates that #13 was kept, and was in the Brevoort family's possession from at least 1816 to 1874.  Interestingly, OCLC: 918570500 cites the provenance of the diary #39 (1789-90) that… Read More

Very good condition. An illustrated football program for either the October 30, 1943 (Army won, 33-7) or October 21, 1944 (Army won, 12-2) game between the West Point JV team and the Carrier Aircraft Service Unit #23 team, stationed at Atlantic City, NJ. Of the Army's JV team, the 1945 West Point yearbook explains, "Unseen and unsung was the "B" squad football team. The primary purpose of the team was to furnish opposition for the varsity. Day in and day out, these men rehearsed enemy plays for the benefit of "A" squad. How well they did their job is attested by the undefeated varsity record. "B" squad was no mean team in its own right. Playing a schedule of three games, it went undefeated and ranked among the top eighty teams in the nation. Our hats are off to "A" squad's toughest opponent". Many of the players listed here were in the West Point Class of 1945. Single roneographed sheet, folded to make a brochure. 5 1/4 x 8".
