His career saw him at army bases in North Carolina, Alabama, Michigan and Texas and travel around the world. In 1951 he worked at Texas Aviation Industries in USAF Contract Primary Flying School. A 1993 VA notice has him living in Tulsa, OK. Items include many letters of recommendation from superior officers and recommendations for promotion, some laminated. He spent time in Italy, Korea, Philippines (Manila), Japan (Okinawa). Collection contains multiples of his honorable discharge and reenlistment papers, a photo of Max in 1944 in honor of his 41st birthday; a handwritten letter to Max Jr. dated 1944 from Italy "in the Spaghetti Boot." 4pp letter 5 1/4 x 6 3/4" with envelope; vaccination record; 10 (8 3/4 x 7 1/2") b&w photos of the Mt. Vesuvius eruption that took place March 17-23, 1944, and 4 b&w photos of Naples castle and shrine; 12pp typed diary in 2 sections, the first describing 'leaving for WAR' on Aug. 9 1943 landing in Oran, then on to Italy. The circular lists 10 directions for sending letters, including one-page only and of a strictly personal character, typed or clearly written. "... any person may send a letter to a prisoner of war In Japanese hands, but in view of difficulties of transmission it is urged that, until information is received from the Japanese as to prisoners of war and their places of internment, letters should be sent only once a month, and by close relatives only." The Central Red Cross Bureau, based in Melbourne, was the go through organization for such mail. A gripping WWII account of Pape's being shot down over Germany and his subsequent escape across Europe, signed and dedicated to another highly decorated WWII hero and survivor. Sir Basil Edward Embry (1902 - 1977) was the Commander-in-Chief of Fighter Command from 1949 to 1953. He too was shot down over Germany, captured by the German army, escaped and evaded recapture for two months in occupied France, before getting home to England via Spain and Gibraltar. 8vo, 309pp, maps.
