1883. A lovely sampling of sea mosses collected at Vineyard Sound, Martha's Vineyard and pasted into a dark-red, felt album in August 1883. Each page contains an entirely distinct sea moss mounted onto a uniform, white cardboard backdrop, which is then tipped-onto the page. 15 separate plates. The album has held up very nicely. There's light age-spotting and darkening along a number of the page edges but the specimens themselves are bright and clean and well-preserved. The octavo album is very solid as well and has maintained most of its original late 19th century luster.

Tight and Near Fine in its navy-blue cloth, with crisp gilt-lettering and insignia along the spine. Tiny former owner name and date at the front padstedown, light foxing to the pastedowns and endsheets. Tall quarto, Vol. III, Part I in the "Memoirs of the Peabody Museum of Yale University" series.

Tight and Near Fine in a crisp, price-intact, Near Fine dustjacket, with just a touch of light creasing along the edges. Thick octavo, 418 pgs. "With two plates in colour and 232 line drawings by Joanna Webb and the author", plus large fold-out map of West Africa at the rear. Part of the British Museum's wonderful Natural History series.

Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1880. Decorative Cloth. Very Good +. A very pleasing copy of the 1879 1st edition. Clean and VG+ in its russet cloth, with lovely pictorial gilt-design and titling along the front panel and spine. Abrading and wear at the inner hinges (which are both still perfectly strong), a touch of light scuffing to the front panel and former owner name and date (1879) to the first blank endpaper. Octavo, almost 3 dozen engravings complementing Frederick Ober's text.

Tight and Near Fine in its dark-green cloth, with bright gilt-insignia and lettering along the spine. Tiny former owner name (and date) stamped at the front pastedown's top-edge, otherwise clean as could be. Tall quarto, 11 plates at the rear and dozens of line drawings thruout the text.

New York: Greenwood Press, 1968. Cloth. Near Fine. A very handsome example of this 1968 Greenwood Press re-issue of T.H. Huxley's collected essays, complete in 9 volumes. Save for a tiny former owner name and date stamped to the top-edge of each front pastedown, all 9 volumes are tight and crisp and virtually pristine. Thick, uniform octavos in their wine-red cloth, with bright, unrubbed gilt-lettering along the spines, each volume is solid and well-preserved and easily Near Fine. This collection of essays from the renowned English biologist, even in this re-issue, is uncommon as such, in its complete run.

By the 2nd volume the magazine was renamed "The Conchologist: A Journal of Malacology" and by Vol. III just "The Journal of Malacology". All 3 volumes clean and solid. Each volume rebound in a uniform dark-green cloth, with bright gilt-lettering along the spines. (The original wrappers bound-in at the rear of each volume). Mild scuffing to Vol. III's boards and light foxing to the endsheets of Vol. I, otherwise tight and well-preserved. Octavos, 400 pgs. all told.

Cambridge University Press, 2002. Cloth. Fine/Fine. A very impressive example of the first 13 volumes (of 28 published so far --30 all told are planned) in this extraordinary, sweeping collection of letters to and from Charles Darwin. All 13 volumes are in gorgeous condition, each tight and Fine in a crisp, Near Fine to Fine dustjacket. The first 13 volumes were published between 1985 and 2002 and all but one of them (Vol. 1) are 1st editions. Octavos, the general editors of this ambitious project are Frederick Burkhardt and Sydney Smith (who passed away midway thru, to be replaced by Duncan M. Porter).

Calcutta: Khadi Pratisthan, 1945. 1st. Decorative Cloth. Collectible; Very Good. Impressive--and uncommon--2 Vol. study of the role of the cow in Modern India. 1st edition, 1945. Both volumes solid and bright and VG+ in publisher's illustrated grey cloth. Wonderful pictorial image of Gandhi on both front panels with the following observation below his profile: "I commend the volume to the lover of the cow as also to every one who would learn that the slaughter of cattle for food ia a pure economic waste and know how he can turn the cow into a giver of plenty instead of being the giver of scanty who owing to criminal negligence she has become today". Thick 12mos, 1,963 pgs. all told, 163 tables, small folding map, 61 duotone photographs of cows, stone dragging contests, etc. Vol. I: Breeding--Dairy Industries; Vol. II: The Body of the Cow--Its Disease and Treatment.

London: Longman and Co, 1859. Original Wraps. Good. The 1859 issue ("Volume the Third") of Davy's Devon Herd Book. Solid and tight and VG- in its original printed blue wrappers. One stain at the lower fore-edge corner of the front wrapper and several other minor spots to the panels, otherwise very clean. Save for the slightest hint of foxing to the endsheets, no writing or markings of any kind internally. Octavo, 113 pgs.

New York: Tudor Publishing Co, 1935. Decorative Cloth. Collectible; Very Good/Very Good. A handsome copy of the 1935 Tudor re-issue, including 12 lavish tipped-in color plates by E.J. Detmold. Solid and VG in its green cloth, with bright gilt-design and lettering to the front panel and spine. And in a crisp, price-clipped, VG dustjacket, with light offsetting to the rear panel and very light soiling (and one small closed tear) at the front panel. Quarto, 271 pgs. Also includes a sturdy, solid example of the publisher's pictorial box, with mild darkening at the front panel.

Albany, NY: The State of New York, 1886. Cloth. Very Good. The uncommon maiden annual report (1885) of New York State's Forest Commission. Solid and VG in its dark-green cloth, with light wear and spotting along the top-edges and the fore-edges. Internally very sharp, with no writing or markings to speak of. Tipped-in strip at the front free endpaper ("Compliments of Townsend Cox, Commissioner"). Octavo, also includes large fold-out color map ("Map of the Adirondack Plateau Showing the Position & Condition of Existing Forests") tucked into a pocket at the front pastedown.

Albany, NY: The Conservation Commission, State of New York, 1912. Cloth. Near Fine. The 1911 and 1912 first 2 annual reports of the Conservation Commissions of the State of New York. Both volumes solid and VG+ to Near Fine in their olive-green cloth, with bright, completely unrubbed gilt-titling and insignia along the spines. Just a touch of light spotting at Vol. I's front panel, 2 small, discreet former owner stamps to the front free endpapers. Uniform quartos, dozens of charts and photos throughout, including a very large fold-out map at each volume.

Handsomely (and professionally) re-bound in a black leatherette over marbled boards. New endsheets as well but, happily, the original marbled endsheets bound-in. Tightly-bound and VG+, with bright gilt-lettering at the spine. Internally very clean, with little foxing to speak of and all plates --with their original tissue-guards as protection-- bright and crisp. Thick quarto, 223 pgs. plus Index. Includes 50 gorgeous plates (with descriptions).
