Spines faded with some softening to ends and discolouration. Corners bumped. Bookplates on front endpapers. Yellow front free endpaper missing in vol. 1. Plates are based on the watercolor paintings of Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917) whose initials appear as A.F.L. on the plates. Lydon was an English watercolour artist, illustrator, and engraver of natural history and landscapes.

Green half-leather binding with marbled boards and endpapers. Rebacked with original spine details, lettering and arabesque designs preserved. Wear to boards at edges and corners. Pages clean. John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) is probably best remembered as the father of author, Rudyard Kipling, for whom he illustrated many books. He was an artist, a museum curator and served as Principal at Mayo School of Arts in Lahore, British India (now Pakistan). This book looks at animals in relation to Indian culture, a subject he studied while living in Lahore. The animals include monkeys, asses, goats and sheep, goats and oxen, buffaloes and pigs, horses and mules, elephants, camels, etc. Chapters on animals calls, animal training, reptiles, animals in Indian art, beast fights, animals and the supernatural.

Some wear to spine with small tears in spine ends and tear in front hinge. Corners worn. Boards lightly soiled. Foxing mainly to first pages. Front hinge cracking a little. Rear endpapers replaced. Thumbprints. With the exception of the Donkey illustration, which has some thumbing and faint blue marks, the plates are spotless, vibrant and captivating to look at. Florence Dugdale (Mrs. Thomas Hardy) described a diverse menagerie composed of a polar bear, squirrel, donkey, rat, chimpanzee, elephant, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, tiger, camel, giraffe, kangaroo, dog, kitten, colt, lamb, calf, llama and fawn.
