Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1931 First edition, first printing of the author's fourth novel. Bound in the publisher's orange cloth, with a key image stamped in black to the front board, with steel blue and black stamped decorations to the spine. A very good copy with a slight lean to spine, spine ends lightly worn with a touch of fraying to the upper spine, cloth lightly faded, contemporary former owner inscription from 1931 to the front endpaper. Unlike his previous three novels, Hammett's classic crime noir novel The Glass Key does not feature a detective as the main character. However, the novel's protagonist is perhaps Hammett's most hard-boiled; the text features Ned Beaumont, a morally questionable political fixer for the crooked construction magnate Paul Madvig, in a plot that involves a complicated murder case that exposes multiple layers of corruption and betrayal. Said to be one of Hammett's favorites of his own novels, The Glass Key is unusual in that it provides… Read More

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949 First American edition, first printing. One of 12,500 copies. Publisher's reddish orange cloth, stamped in dark blue to front board and lettered in dark blue to spine; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Boris Artzybasheff. A near fine copy with a slight lean to the spine, spine ends with some fading; unclipped dust jacket about very good, with shallow chipping along edges, some loss to the spine ends (affecting "Raymond" and partially to the "N" in "Mifflin"), early tape reinforcements to jacket verso, mostly along spine. A good or better copy. The Little Sister is the fifth detective novel in Chandler's series featuring his protagonist Detective Philip Marlowe, "the most exciting high-velocity private investigator in the business." Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company,, 1954 First edition, first printing. Publisher's dark grayish red cloth, stamped in silver to spine; in the original green pictorial dust jacket designed by Fritz Wegner. A near fine copy with light rubbing and wear to the edges; in a very good, moderately worn unclipped dust jacket with a few tiny chips to the spine ends and corners at flap folds, several small creases along the edges and a couple tiny tears, early tape reinforcement to upper spine at jacket verso. Overall, a bright copy, free of repairs or restoration. Housed in a custom slipcase. Bruccoli A10.1.a The Long Good-Bye is the 6th Philip Marlowe mystery and is considered one of Chandler's more autobiographical texts; while he drew on personal experiences as inspirations for many of his novels, Chandler wrote this novel while his wife was dying and references much of his insecurities related to her illness and his own alcoholism throughout the text. In letters to Jamie Hamilton, Chandler's… Read More

About very good with significant foxing to wrappers, text block edges, and publisher's wraparound band, wear to spine ends with rear hinge slightly starting, interior very clean. Overall, a nice copy of this rare and fragile proof copy. Bruccoli A11.1.a Playback is the eighth and final complete detective novel in Chandler's series featuring his protagonist Detective Philip Marlowe, published in the year before the author's death.
