The authors of this early biography of Pope John XXIII are a veteran of the Vatican Secretariat of State and a Romance language professor at Seton Hall University. Illustrated with b&w photos on eight double-sided plates. 8vo, gilt paper over boards with white cloth quarter, gilt lettering on spine, edges of boards rubbed, edges age-toned. Price-clipped DJ is heavily worn and has creasing, numerous chips and tears, the latter repaired with clear tape; ink highlighting mark on rear flap. Previous ownership info blacked out on ffep, underscoring and/or margin marks on approximately 50 pages.

Good/Fair. 378 pages, with index, chronology, list of Huxley's works, illustrated with 15 b&w photos on plates. 8vo, turquoise cloth with gilt lettering on spine, corners sharp, discoloration of boards along bottom and behind the large chip in DJ front panel, foxing and stains to edges, in unclipped (UK price), soiled and shelf-worn DJ with large triangular chip to front panel at bottom, repaired holes in back panel and flap, corners cut off from back panel. Chapters on individual artists Asher B. Durand, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, others. Large trade paperback (7-1/4" x 9-5/8"), glossy wraps curled, 1/4" tear to fore-edge, corner creases and other wear, foxing to edges and end papers, stain to p. 82-83 from laid-in clipping. No marks observed within. Laid-in clipping is a review, possibly from the TLS, of different book, Romantic Re-Vision by Bryan Jay Wolf.

Translated from the French by Denise Folliot from the French edition titled Apollinaire le Mal-Aimé. 5-1/4" x 8", green cloth with gilt lettering on spine, dust soiling to top edge, light foxing and smudge to fore-edge, foxing and newspaper stains to end papers (laid-in clipping of Sept. 29, 1966 New York Times obituary of Apollinaire's friend André Breton conveys with this book), in unclipped, rubbed DJ with soiling at margins and 3/4" tear to back panel along spine. Notes in pencil by a former owner on rfep, pencilled margin bracket observed on one other page, else pages clean and unmarked.

Chronological description of the works by the editor, interspersed with biographical notes. 4to (9-1/8" x 12-1/4"), beige cloth with red lettering, boards soiled and worn with losses to backstrip, which has been reglued to prevent further damage, faded red topstain, end papers foxed and age-tanned. Name of former owner written in pencil on first free end paper. Underscoring and/or marginalia on approximately five pages in the index and text section. Despite the beat-up exterior, the art reproductions are clean and beautiful. The book was a gift to (later Professor) Ann Evans (Berthoff) from her friend the harpsichordist Eugenia Earle. Laid in are two clippings: from the TLS in 1971, a review of several books about and collections of Dürer; London Review of Books 2003 on a Dürer exhibition at the British Museum.
