Essays by three and a half dozen authors, from Aristotle to Auden, arranged for use by college students: a section of Theory, a section of "Essays, Narratives and Verse", and a short section offering topics for discussion. Trade paperback, wraps shelf-worn, front cover split from spine 2" at bottom and taped, 1/2" at top, spine creased, edges age-toned, a few pages stained tan as from laid-in newspaper clipping. Except for small marks next to a few titles in the table of contents, pages are clean.

Date not stated, c. 1860s. 4to (9-1/2" x 11-7/8", 2-1/4" thick), full leather with decorative gilt border on front and back boards; five divisions on spine with raised separations and gilt "HOGARTH" against black in the second compartment, partially rubbed away; leather rubbed, eroded and scratched, with tear to back board; corners worn through to underlying cardboard; hinges cracked and cover split along them, with backstrip loose at the rear; vertical crease to the length of the spine opposite where binding is cracked at p. 137. Translated by Jacques LeClercq, who interpolated some explanations from Champion's Critical French edition; illustrated by Lynd Ward. 8vo, 2" thick, beige cloth with blue lettering on spine, end papers decorated with drawings - blemished patch on ffep, boards lightly soiled and shelf worn, backstrip rumpled at crown. Bookplate affixed to second front free end paper states the volume was awarded to (later Prof.) Warner Berthoff at the Hotchkiss School, 1943; that page is rumpled. Underscoring and/or marginalia in pencil observed on approximately 10 pages.

Anthology of humoristic writings of the American "west" (Mark Twain, Artemus Ward, many others) and essays in Italian translation. Series "Tradizione americana". 5" x 7-1/4" (~12.7x18.4cm), dark green leatherette with gilt lettering, only visible flaws are a few small black spots on the back board and bump along its top edge. Price sticker affixed to rear pastedown, dust jacket is lightly soiled and worn with small (up to 1 cm) tears to top edge. Inscribed by Grolier on the front free end paper to Prof. Warner Berthoff in 1972, when WB was on a Fulbright tour visiting Italian Americanists. Interior pages bright and unmarked.

Price-clipped DJ is soiled and more heavily worn, with tears and chips (1/2" at crown). Old price in pencil on front free end paper, interior pages unmarked.

A whimsical alphabet in reverse, with texts and b&w illustrations (drawings and reproductions) throughout. 5-5/8" x 8-1/2" pamphlet style, stapled in pale blue wraps without visible wear, faded along fold, staples rusted, end papers pink, pages printed on alternating pink and yellow paper, slight soil and faintest foxing to top edge; DJ has some small soil spots, beginnings of a crease at front bottom corner. Signed by the author with his swash and "e". From the library of his friend Ann E. Berthoff (not stated).
