Description:
One of 5 000 copies published.
First and only translation of "Bright Metal" in Russian.
The first Russian translation of T.S. Stribling (1881-1965), an American writer and Pulitzer Prize laureate (1933), was published in 1926. This was followed by four more books, all published by 1929. The subsequent Russian translation appeared only in 1948 and marked the final Russian book by Stribling. The novel "Bright Metal" was translated by Mark Volosov (1895-1941). Volosov was captured during the Great War and managed to escape to the US. Upon his return in 1923, he pursued a career in translation. Notably, he translated works by authors such as Theodore Dreiser, Michael Gold, and Erskine Caldwell. Tragically, Volosov lost his life during the battle of Vyazma in 1941.The cover design was produced by Boris Titov (1897-1951), a prominent illustrator and book artist. He received education at the Second State Free Art Workshops (GShM, later VKhUTEMAS) under A. Arkhipov. In the Soviet Union, Titov holds a record… Read More

Description:
One of 6 000 copies published.First and only edition of this translation. Russian readers first encountered Bret Harte's stories and essays in 1873. It's interesting that Nikolay Chernyshevsky, a journalist, novelist, and leading theoretician of Russian nihilism and Narodniks, translated Harte's story Miggls while he was in exile in Siberia. These works swiftly garnered immense popularity among Russian audiences. The translations of his literary contributions, including his collection of works, continued to be published regularly until 1917. The first Russian translation of Cressy emerged in 1890 within the compilation titled Foreign Fiction Writers, a mere year after the release of the novel's original version. The first Soviet translation became this translation of Cressy published in 1925, finding its way into print through a small private publishing house. This publishing practice persisted until the early 1930s when all publishing houses came under state control.Despite the numerous shifts in… Read More

Description:
First or second copy. Unique typescript of the earlier version of the translation.
The extracts from the novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls", translated into Russian, were scheduled to be published in Znamya magazine in 1941. However, the outbreak of war in June of that year disrupted these plans. Simultaneously, Hemingway faced criticism for the novel and was accused of slander by the Spanish communists. It is believed that Josef Stalin personally read the complete translation of the novel and commented, "Interesting. Printing is forbidden".This original, draft, and pre-proofreading typescript, encompassing the first 18 chapters (with the last chapter lacking an ending), served as the basis for the two-volume edition published in 1962 (without any censorship cuts). This edition was specifically intended for Soviet authorities as part of a special series, marking the first Russian translation of the novel. The series of such books was not intended for distribution through bookstores or libraries. Kiev, Dnipro Publishers, 1973.Rare first edition of the novel in the USSR in English. First edition in Ukrainian language was published only in 1982. Editions in English, issued in the USSR, published usually as adapted text books for schools or universities. However, this edition were printed to 'common' readers and includes the original text. Preface is in the best Soviet propaganda traditions: 'The lust for money, inherent in the so-called "American Way of Life", proved a curse to many of his characters, and sometimes they became victims of their own wealth—like Major Jay Gatsby in this book.' As first Russian edition (1965), this book is printed without epigraph by Thomas Parke D'Invilliers - a pen name of Fitzgerald. The edition is illustrated by Vyacheslav Dozorets (1941-1993) – graphic, art editor later art editor-in-chief of the Ukranian publishing house Dnipro. We couldn't trace any copy in USA via OCLC. It takes place during the Spanish Civil War. In Russian the story was translated very quickly. The magazine has been signed for printing on September 8. Description:
This is an original photograph featuring the writer Philip Roth and actress Nicole Kidman. The photo was taken at the popular New York restaurant, the Russian Samovar, on April 26, 2002. It is likely that multiple copies of this photograph were produced, with one being displayed in the restaurant itself. This particular photo was captured during the filming of 'The Human Stain' movie in 2003, in which both Kidman and Roth were involved. Philip Roth was known to frequent this restaurant.
The Russian Samovar was established in 1986 by emigrants from the USSR, including art critic Roman Kaplan, dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, Joseph Brodsky. Brodsky contributed a portion of his Nobel Prize money to help create the restaurant.
The restaurant also gained fame when Mikhail Baryshnikov and Sarah Jessica Parker filmed a scene for the TV series 'Sex and the City' there. New York magazine described it as 'the best bar for drinking vodka with the Russian intelligentsia.' A… Read More

One of 5 100 copies published.
First and only Russian edition of Norris's "Salt".Rare.
F. Scott Fitzgerald advised young women to read "Salt" (1919) by Charles Gilman Norris (1881-1945), an American novelist and playwright, so that they could gain insight into life. Furthermore, it is known that Fitzgerald sent a copy of "This Side of Paradise" to Norris with the inscription: "For Charles G. Norris, who in 'Salt,' wrote the best American novel since 'Vandover & the Brute,' with the sincere admiration of F. Scott Fitzgerald."In December 1924, in a letter to Maxwell Perkins, Fitzgerald stated that the three most remarkable characters in American fiction in the past twenty years were Tom Buchanan in "The Great Gatsby," the brother in "Salt," and Hurstwood in "Sister Carrie." It's possible that the plot of "Salt" sparked certain ideas for "The Great Gatsby."In the USSR, four translations of Norris's books were published between 1927 and 1929. Unexpectedly, in 1993, "Zelda Marsh" was republished, marking… Read More

The first two Faulkner's books were prepared by Ivan Kashkin (1899–1963), a critic and translator, and by members of his school of translation. In the afterword Kashkin compared Faulkner with Thomas Wolfe, whose first Russian book was published in the same year.
