The collection of feuilletons about labor in pre-revolutionary Russia and the new Soviet country was written by Mikhail Kol'tsov (born Moisey Fridlyand; 1898-1940/2), a journalist and a prominent figure in the Soviet intellectual elite, who also served as an NKVD agent. He played a pivotal role as the founder and editor of Ogonek, Chudak, Krokodil, and Sovetskoe Fotomagazines, and was a member of the editorial board of Pravda. Kol'tsov is renowned for being Stalin's chief reporter during the Spanish Civil War. Notably, Ernest Hemingway portrayed Kol'tsov as the character Karkov in his novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls."In 1938, Kol'tsov faced arrest, and he was subsequently executed either in 1940 or 1942. His name and works were banned and removed from Soviet literature during this period.

Description:
One of 15.000 copies printed.
First edition.
An unusual book of poems published during the beginning of Cold War, but designed as the best Soviet editions of 1930s. Photoillustration is on the front side of the dust jacket, depicting Mayakovsky posing on the Brooklyn Bridge. In 1925 V. Mayakovsky planned to make a trip around the world, but it didn't work out and the poet didn't get even to the western coast of America and spent three months in USA. The result of the trip was a manuscript of a book of essays Moe otkrytie Ameriki [My discovery of America] and the cycle of poems. Essays interspersed with poems in this edition.
Vasily Katanyan, literary critic, Mayakovsky's biographer and a member of the Left Art Front (LEF), prepared for publication a large corpus of the poet's texts. An editor of this publication was A. Tarasenkov, a famous bibliophile and expert on Soviet poetry of the XXth century.
OCLC locates two copies in USA: in MoMA and Princeton library

The construction started in 1927 and was headed by the engineer and one of the founders of the GOELRO plan Genrikh Graftio. In 1931 the concentration camp of Svirlag was established. Many convicts worked at the construction untill 1935. During WWII the dam was destroyed and restored after the war. The Upper Svir Hydroelectric Station was reopened only in 1952. The engineer Genrikh Graftio and Volodymyr Zatonsky, the member of the Central Control Commission, are on the last photo with photomontage. In 1937 Zatonsky was arrested and executed. The album was prepared for delegates of the 4th Hydrological Conference of the Baltic States, which took place on September 1933 in Leningrad.
