Description:
Based on Pushkin's poem [Poltava].
Rare printed musical score.
Mazeppa (or Mazepa) is a three-act opera composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840–1893), based on Pushkin's Poltava and inspired by the cultural legacy of Ivan Mazeppa, the Hetman of the Ukrainian Cossacks, and Vasyl Kochubey, a prosperous Ukrainian nobleman and statesman. The story takes place in Ukraine during the early 18th century. Tchaikovsky worked on the opera between June 1881 and April 1883, and he noted that it was one of the most challenging compositions he had ever undertaken. The opera bears many similarities to Tchaikovsky's other works, such as Eugene Onegin and Romeo and Juliet (as seen in the duet between Mazeppa and Mariya).
The libretto was written by Victor Burenin (1841–1926), a literary and theatre critic, writer, translator, and satirical poet. It was originally prepared for the 'czar of cellists', composer and director of the St. Petersburg Conservatory Karl Davydov, who worked on it in the middle of the 1870s but… Read More

One of 1 000 copies published.
The play was translated by Adrian Piotrovskii (1898-1937), renowned for his translations of classical Greek plays and for his work as a playwright. He was also known as the "godfather" of the Worker's Youth Theatre (TRAM). Being the son of the prominent Polish classicist Tadeusz Stefan Zieliński, Piotrovskii was deeply influenced by his father's efforts to revive open-air Greek theatre. This influence directly inspired Piotrovskii's participation in street theatre during the years following the October Revolution. Additionally, Piotrovskii was a pupil and disciple of the theatre director Vsevolod Meyerhold. For a period, he collaborated with Meyerhold in the Theatrical department of Narkompros. Furthermore, Piotrovskii maintained a close friendship and professional relationship with the theatre director Sergei Radlov. In 1934, he assumed the role of artistic director at the Sovkino/Leningrad Film Studio. In 1937, he was arrested and executed. The play is followed by… Read More

Description:
First publication of a play Tri sestry [Three sisters] by A.P. Chekhov. It was written for the Moscow Art Theatre and performed there for the first time in the same year. The director Konstantin Stanislavsky, Chekhov's future wife Olga Knipper (for whom he wrote Masha's part) and Vsevolod Meyerhold acted in it.
Stanislavsky considered Three sisters as "the best" play by Chekhov.
Sergei Diaghilev, who was editing The Yearbook of the Imperial Theaters at that time, was scrambling for the right to be the first to publish the play. The revised text was published by A.F. Marx later on April.
