Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1959. Hardcover. 384p., hardbound first edition in pale-apricot boards titled red, in dust jacket. A nice copy, no ownership or other marks; unclipped dj is bright but has a small adhesion scar to front panel affecting author's name, and back panel has a light dampstain with offset color. A presentably good copy. "Such bltoches on a nation as race riots, lynchings, government corruption and graft, scandal in high places and the shocking growth of teen-age gangs provided the ingredients of certain explosion," (dustjacket).

Milano / Parigi: Editore Eoardo Sonzogno, 1870. 17x12 inches, a giant hardbound in shaken condition, plates look to be complete with only two margins damaged, description below. 162p., indice. Illustrated with numerous b&w lithographs: ten doublespread battle scemes, three doublespread maps (one line map, two view-maps), many single-page views (not all plates show battle), and way way too many portraits. A folio in very worn marbled boards, narrow vellum spine (true vellum; may be an old restoration to head, we're unsure), endsheets are original and though somewhat dirty are intact, gutters look weak but no threads showing. No leaves are at risk of detachment. We have paged through the book and the only repulsive flaw is that a small corner of mildew has settled in the terminal dozen or so leaves, triangular areas about 2x3 inches. npl: Corvus Distribution, nd. Pamphlet. [4]p., stapled wraps, 5.5x8.5 inches, very good condition. Reprints two essays, "Law, Commerce, and Religion", originally printed in The Boston Investigator, June 30, 1862 and "Suggestions", originally printed in Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly, June 20, 1874.

San Francisco: L.P. McCarty, Publisher, 1877. Hardcover. 468p., small hardbound in 7x4.5 inch pebbled green cloth boards gilt; mild edgewear, probably from storage rather than from handling, we see signs of sophistication (tinting of abrasions) but even so a largely unhandled copy. Front hinge cracked at the copyright page which, with its verso the titlepage, was tipped onto a front blank, entire volume opens stiffly, compiler Mains plumped for least-expensive binderywork (credited to Spaulding & Barto, Book and Job Printers on Clay St., give them a wide berth). Cloth and gilt are bright, stats doubtless accurate, basically an exemplar what was thought to be important to San Franciscans in the '70s. Preface by compiler says he was encouraged by good sales of his first such annual, this his second, it was followed by further annuals.

Philadelphia: The Leisenring Steam Printing House, 1871. Pamphlet. 38p., wraps chipped on the edges, rear wrap detached but present, small stain in bottom margin of the text block, minor internal handling wear, coal company stamp on front wrap. On his disputes with the Workingmen's Benevolent Association (the anthracite coalminers' union), wage issues and the like. It was Gowen's breaking the union in 1874 that lead to the Molly Maguire scare.

Athens: Konstantine Alexandropolous, 1875. Magazine. Single issue of the scarce satirical periodical, four pages, folded from a single sheet; folded into quarters, with a couple of minor splits at the folds. Poetry, prose, and a full-page cartoon.

Portland, ME: The Southworth Press, 1932. Pamphlet. Offprint, pp.769-799p. (see especially birth notice on p.792) a plain printed pamphlet softbound in 9.5x6 inch floral-toned green wraps with clerical-edged wraps (overlapping one eighth inch, mildly crimped roundabout with a quarter-inch tear at the heel), otherwise sound, quite clean, and unmarked except for a dealer's penciled note on the title page we have chosen to leave unerased, a very good copy. On William Henry Chaney, the biological father of Jack London.

Hillsdale, MI: Wright & Green, 1878. 28p. poetry chapbook, bound with cord through punched holes; covers somewhat stained and edgeworn. Collection of poems by the author who frequently published on temperance and missionary themes.

New York: Columbia University Press, 1951. Paperback. 301p., plus a page long vita, folded line-map as frontispiece, softbound dissertation in 9x6 inch plain printed grey wraps. Sound and square with mild edgewear and sunning of extremities, clean and unmarked within, a very good copy of Gordon's book in its fragile first issue state. Berkeley: University of California / Bancroft Library, 1978. Pamphlet. 39p., illustrated with mug- and snap-shots of eminent professors, softbound, a stapled 9x6 inch pamphlet; covers are faintly sunned, and front cover bears the author's signed inscription to "Ann," his editor. A very good copy. Professor Constance was tapped for an annual Bernard Moses Memorial Lecture, and wondered why, "knowing only that he had a University building named for him;" it so happened that Moses was a groundbreaking scholar of Latin America and that UC Berkeley was in one of its periodic ignore-South-America phases.

London: Samuel French, [187-]. 12p. pamphlet, very good, light handling. British edition of the play simultaneously published in New York. Undated, and French's editions were reprinted in some cases for years, but the reference to Lacy's ("French's Acting Edition [late Lacy's]") suggests that this edition was published relatively soon after French bought out Lacy's in 1873. An ad prominently mentions the book, "How to Make Up," which was published in 1877. Script for a 30-minute blackface comedy featuring a stereotypical clumsy servant speaking in heavy dialect.

Manila: Philippine Studies, 1969. Paperback. pp457-528, wraps, 6x9 inches, wraps lightly worn, bookstore label on verso of front wrap, previous owner's name penciled on first page, else very good condition. Texts and documents reprinted from Philippine Studies, Vol. 17, No. 3, July 1969. Burgos was a Filipino Catholic priest who was executed by the Spanish for his alleged role in the Cavite Mutiny of 1872.

Cuneo, IT: Studio Garneri, 1870. Photograph. 1 photograph. 5.5 x 4.25 in, mounted onto board 9.75 x 7 in. Studio portrait of a person with a mustache wearing a military-like uniform whose lapels have harps, in a matching cap, holding a clarinet and standing amid fake ruins; a sheet of paper (probably meant to represent music) is propped up on a ruin that the subject is leaning against. Garneri Ippolito was a photographer in Cuneo, Italy active since 1870.

New York: D.M. Bennett, Liberal and Scientific Publishing House, 1878. 1119, [ix]p., original cloth binding professionaly refurbished, hinges neatly reinforced with archival tape, frontis portrait of Bennett; spine bears a half-inch scratch, blank top 1.5 inch strip removed from title page. Truth Seeker library.

New York: Cigar Makers' International Union of America, 1880. Newspaper. Seven issues of the newspaper, disbound at left edge with thread and paper chips still adhering; some edge chipping but text is lost only at one corner of one page. Horizontal fold. Issues present are vol. V numbers 2-8. Updates on cigar union organizing, strikes, industry news, relevant legislative updates, and issues such as "tenement-house cigars" (disparaged as much as Chinese-made "coolie cigars," but produced in New York slums). Also included are the union's own fiscal records. These issues represent one of the most active periods of expansion for the union.
