Paperback. 210p., nine full-page woodblock illustrations (ten, counting cover), softbound first edition in 7.5x5 inch decorated wraps printed black and red on smooth yellow stock. Front cover is nearly detached with an ineffective bit of old tape at the heel, very acidic textblock with a bad bump and crumpling to tips of many leaves. All cover texts, and all images and content within are intact, but item is hard to handle, and was bound rather stiffly to begin with. As is.

Illustrated with numerous b&w lithographs: ten doublespread battle scemes, three doublespread maps (one line map, two view-maps), many single-page views (not all plates show battle), and way way too many portraits. A folio in very worn marbled boards, narrow vellum spine (true vellum; may be an old restoration to head, we're unsure), endsheets are original and though somewhat dirty are intact, gutters look weak but no threads showing. No leaves are at risk of detachment. We have paged through the book and the only repulsive flaw is that a small corner of mildew has settled in the terminal dozen or so leaves, triangular areas about 2x3 inches. Fiftieth birthday gag for Randy Alfred a freelance journalist and radio talk show host in the San Francisco area during the 1970s-1980s.

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1991. Hardcover. xxvi, 254p., provides a b&w section of period photography, first edition 9.5x7 inch purple boards gilt in dust jacket. Book itself has some dealer pencilling to front free endsheet, and the dj suffered two bad tears which have been repaired with verso-applied clear tape. Item is else free of any other markings or any soil. A very good copy.

Springfield OH: Crowell-Collier Publishing Co, 1940. Magazine. 166p., slick magazine in 11.5x8.5 inch color wraps, some color within. Cover text announces "I Backed Hitler by Fritz Thyssen" but full title starts "I Made a Mistake When.." First couple of leaves bear marginal tears and the terminal leaves are very faintly rippled by damp; no adhesions, a pretty good copy. Besides the many visuals (some dreadful, of course), find an essay by Turner Catledge (Mississippi-born, managing editor at NYT throughout the 1950s, and a tolerant portrait of Norman Thomas with photos of self and family (but the author offers no endorsement).
