First edition in 9x5.5 inch blue cloth boards gilt, illustrations on glossy inserted stock. Edgeworn with a touch of fray and a high "reader's crease" to spine panel; text clean and unmarked. Endsheets bear several brief ownership signatures. Text has some discussion of slavery.

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1992. Paperback. xxxviii, 309p., softbound illustrated solely with five skimpy line maps (a 1998 reprint may be better-furnished), anyway, theoretical cartography by a scholar of African history who had taught in Zambia, later doing research made possible by a Carter G. Woodson Institute fellowship. Thornton builds on Fernand Braudel's Mediterranean studies (who he says insufficiently valued Africa's role).

Criticism on a number of writers, mostly modern (from the Harlem Renaissance to the present), with sections on slave narratives, Wheatley, Dunbar and Du Bois, and contributions from a number of well-known authors (Barbara Christian, Arnold Rampersand, Henry Louis Gates, etc.). Sections on Baldwin and Lorde are included.

Washington DC: USPO, 2003. Pamphlet. Government pamphlet on high-gloss alkaline paperstock, 9x6 inches stapled, an unblemished copy. Features colorphoto exhibit photos, 3 or 4 to a page, 28 p., a surprising number of different people got memorialized. I guess you had to be dead.

San Francisco: Olema Press, 1984. Hardcover. Two volumes. [American slavery ..., vii, 345p; Notes ..., v, 862,], original cloth binding, both volumes ex library with all the usual markings. Olshausen, a radical San Francisco lawyer, spent much of his life working on this history of American slavery, focusing on jurisprudential questions. He took the manuscript with him when he emigrated to Yugoslavia in the 1960s; five of its six chapters, along with the notes that form a separate volume, were recovered after his death in 1978. The five chapters published here carry the history through the Compromise of 1850; the footnotes are found in the companion volume.

Boston: The Christopher Publishing House, 1957. Hardcover. 310p.,very good in a somewhat soiled and rubbed priceclipped dj. Weatherford, a contributor to the Southern Workman, attempts to convey the attitudes of the leading denominations toward religious work among Blacks.

Gainesville FL: University of Florida Press, 1952. Hardcover. xiii, 125p., the first edition with the fragile dust jacket intact. Rubricated titlepage. Hardbound in 8.5x5.5 inch brown cloth boards gilt-titled and enclosed in the unclipped dj; jacket is printed sepia on pulp-speckled matte paper, top edge a little ragged, bears an inch-long closed tear and a minute chip at the head. Endsheets also of "artsy" wood-fragment stock in very good condition. A close inspection of the book itself shows it also to be quite a crisp clean copy, with perfect rims, no ownership marks.

"Mitteilungen" der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Natur- und Völkerkunde Ostasiens; Bd. XXIX Teil B. The German Society for the Natural History and Ethnology of East Asia was one of the earlier foreign scientific societies based in Japan. After 1933 it increasingly came under the influence of Nazi political aims.

New York: Scribner's, 1925. Hardcover. 270p., heavy foxing, first edition in blue-gray cloth boards; a sound, handleable, but thoroughly foxed exemplar. Author's third book. A novel of the illicit slave trade in New England on a clipper ship, whites battling it out.

Palo Alto: National Press Books, 1972. Hardcover. x, 370p., illustrated in b&w from period cuts and modern dance photography, hardbound first edition in tan cloth boards lettered black and enclosed in the dust jacket. The book itself is quite fresh, entirely sound, clean and unmarked, while the dj is somewhat edgeworn with a 1-inch chip to back panel. All in all, a very good copy.

An all-but-immaculate copy, a Library of Congress Duplicate with its stamp a little crooked on the titlepage and an LC sticker to back cover (underneath the dust jacket). As stated, as new except for these signs renouncing acquisition.
