One of 475 copies printed by Robert Grabhorn & Andrew Hoyem. 171 pages printed on heavy wove paper, quarter bound brick red leather with title in gilt on the spine, patterned paper over boards, hardcover - very good condition (minor scuffing at head and tale of spine from shelf wear, not affecting contents).

Illustrated with 60 plates - full size reproductions showing examples of California Gold Rush letter sheets - one facsimile is in a pocket at the rear of the book. Also included: a selective bibliography; an index of artists, engravers, lithographers, and publishers; and a subject and title index.

A checklist and census of artists and printers who produced "... thousands of vivid pictorial records on sheets of writing paper, (that) remain the major surviving visual account of California of that era....," both during and after the California Gold Rush.

Herndon was Lincoln's former law partner. His remarks, taken from a lecture, first appeared in print in a very rare broadside, and then in another rarity published in 1915, before appearing in this book.

[i-xvi], i-vi, 1-[80] pages, 30 plates on 16 leaves, double map, index, one of 500 copies, hardcover, dark brown cloth with a quarter bound beige cloth spine, title stamped in gold on the backstrip, top and bottom edges trimmed, fore edges untrimmed.

According to "Thomas E. Williams & The Fine Arts Press" by Richard D. Curtiss, "The advance notice for this book indicates 500 copies printed, whereas a print out by the publisher indicates only 400 copies printed. The former is believed to be the correct number of copies printed."

Very good condition (small, discreet inked name of a previous owner on front fly leaf; covers and spine slightly aged toned, some pages uncut.)

An exploration of the Southwest missions established by Padre Kino, presented in a fine press edition. "In this book it is my purpose to direct the traveler to every location where Kino erected a church."

Very good condition (bookplate "From the Library of the Iron Bear Press, Gary & Kathy Miller" on front paste down, shadow residue of old labels since removed on front fly leaf and bottom of title page, not affecting contents).

Bound by the second generation of the same Earle Gray Bindery that originally bound all Fine Arts Press books. Illustrated with photo portraits of Thomas E. Williams and examples of his title pages. A nice association: a notable Santa Ana fine press's biography and bibliography that once belonged to a modern fine press that still exists in San Diego.

Especially useful is the bibliography detailing the output of the Press.
