The Second Edition, with the Addition of several hundred Sentences.[14] 166 [1], good condition: later speckled calf, corners slightly bumped, red label in gilt on rebacked spine; hinges showing mild wear, but holding; old worming to margins of a few end leaves (not affecting text); bookplate on first fly leaf, inked name of previous owner dated 1893 on front paste down; old inked notes on back fly leaf; overall sound, and in good condition. ESTC R27673

Running headline: "A Poetical Sport." When the book is open, the verso of a previous page (i.e. on the left) contains the Latin expression, the English meaning is on the recto of the opposite page (i.e. on the right). An expression "He knows not a hawk from an handsaw," included on page 37, was used by Shakespeare in his play Hamlet.

First Edition. 11 pages printed on rectos, original stapled wrappers, with a portrait on the front cover (perhaps, the author) in cowboy costume (six gun and gun belt, fringed chaps, hat - lighting a cigarette), advertisements inside covers, and on back cover for other books of recitations and monologues, with neat rubber stamp "prices void" over some of the ads; very good condition (old label neatly pasted below author's name on front cover, insignificant pencil marks in margins of front cover, not affecting contents).

The "Sketches" include: "Squaws," "The Cow Puncher," and "Calvalary (sic) and Cowboys," among others.

Original First Edition. 55 pages illustrated with 15 unnumbered leaves of fine engraved plates: 2 portraits (including frontispiece), hardcover, rebound in old brown cloth, with gilt label affixed to spine, very good condition (unobtrusive small gift stamp on back of front fly leaf, deckled edges with scattered old moisture stains along lower margins of a few pages, not affecting contents or plates).

Considered "a working class poet," this "memoir" is accompanied by selections from several of his works in the text, (including The Farmer's Boy), and fine engravings of locations that figured prominently in the the poet's life.

Decorative black and white line drawings by Spencer Wright, in the margins surrounding the text, representing people working in gardens; Art nouveau image of a potted plant on cover - its tendrils reaching for the title in gilt, and repeated on spine.

Printed by the Tomoye Press, under the direction of Harry Nash; decorative end papers (small unobtrusive stamp of previous owner in margin of first fly leaf, and repeated in pencil on back of first fly leaf) good condition (minor age toning to covers and spine, not affecting contents which are clean).

A collection thoughts on gardens and gardening that includes quotations from Joseph Addison, Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Milton, Margaret Deland, John Keats, William Blake, and Shakespeare among many others, presented in an attractive format reflecting the period.
