Octavo (9 by 6 1/4 inches) New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. Later Printing (First was 1893) 310 pages, illustrated with 38 black and white halftone images taken from photographs by the author, along with drawings by others, and music; hardcover, good condition, decorated brown cloth, with stamped black and yellow pattern on cover and spine, resembling Southwestern weaving, and framing the title in gilt; and similarly on spine; upper right corner of front cover slightly bent from old bump, not affecting contents.

Signed presentation from the author to William G. Kerkhoff, an early Southern California business man and philanthropist. Lummis writes, "To ... Staunch Old Timer."

Small quarto (9 3/4 X 6 1/2 inches) Santa Ana, California: The Fine Arts Press, 1934. First Edition. [i-xvi], i-vi, 1-[80] pages, 30 plates on 16 leaves, double map, index, one of 500 copies, hardcover, dark brown cloth with a quarter bound beige cloth spine, title stamped in gold on the backstrip, top and bottom edges trimmed, fore edges untrimmed.

According to "Thomas E. Williams & The Fine Arts Press" by Richard D. Curtiss, "The advance notice for this book indicates 500 copies printed, whereas a print out by the publisher indicates only 400 copies printed. The former is believed to be the correct number of copies printed."

Very good condition (small, discreet inked name of a previous owner on front fly leaf; covers and spine slightly aged toned, some pages uncut.)

An exploration of the Southwest missions established by Padre Kino, presented in a fine press edition. "In this book it is my purpose to direct the traveler to every location where Kino erected a church."

Description:
Small octavo (8 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches) Los Angeles: Westernlore Press, 1961. An Edition of 900 copies only of which 800 copies are for sale. Brick red cloth boards with embossed device of a covered wagon on the front cover. 100 pages illustrated with black and white historic photographs, index, Indian vocabulary, bibliography. Very good condition (previous owner's neat inscription and date on first fly leaf).

At the time of the California Gold Rush, shortly after the end of the Mexican War, in September 1849, Whipple and the man assigned to guard him, Cave Couts, were assigned to survey the new international boundary line in the vicinity of the Gila and Colorado rivers; as required by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

According to E. I. Edwards, who wrote the introduction, notes, and bibliography: "Of all the early accounts written by the emigrants of the gold trail who crossed our Southern California desert, none can claim quite the same degree of distinction that attaches to the Whipple Report .... "
