The material for this book, published by the Nottoway County Historical Association, was taken from three books published by Captain Irby and now out-of-print: "The Nottoway Greys," "The History of Randolf-Macon College and "Bird-Notes and Other Sketches." plus a collection of letters written to Virginia Jordan's grandmother by Captain Irby. The Captain was a commissioned officer in the Confederate Army, he saw action and was wounded at the Battle of Second Manassa. After the war and a career in business Irby became Randolf Macon College's Secretary and Treasurer from 1886 until 1902, resigning only shortly before his death.
