Description:
Los Angeles, 1920. Letters. Creases from mailing. Near Fine. Four AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, totaling 9 pages, three of them to his good Hoosier friend and fellow socialist, Oliver M. Sayler. In the first letter, dated 9 January 1920, Dreiser suggests places Sayler could work in New York, mentioning many names including T. R. Smith of the Century Company, Henry Harper at Harper's, J. Jefferson Jones of the John Lane Company, Herbert Kauffmann at McCLURE'S, and Horace Liveright. In the second letter, dated 14 February 1920, Dreiser kindly answers Sayler's request for a letter of introduction to a paper named THE EVENING POST. He informs Sayler that most likely the letter would not do much help as it has "in so far as I can recall been anything but condemnatory -- or perhaps I had better say scornful of me & my opinions." He urges Sayler to go to other places such as the HERALD or TRIBUNE. The third letter, also dated 14 February 1920, is addressed to Mr. Scott at THE EVENING POST recommending Sayler… Read More

Description:
1848. Letter. Creases from folding; otherwise Fine. One-page letter to the Honorable John Davis, former governor of Massachusetts and United States senator at the date of this letter: 11 August 1848. On an integral sheet is Everett's SIGNATURE with a Cambridge postmark, red wax seal, and a free frank in the form of a stamp of the word "FREE" with "Free" written by Everett over that. Everett writes regarding a memorial presented to the Senate by Davis for his sister Mrs. A. H. Everett. Edward Everett--a Unitarian minister, member of both the United States Congress and Senate, and also a governor of Massachusetts--is perhaps best known for his oratory powers. It is he who gave the "other" address at Gettysburg on 19 November 1863. The next day he wrote Lincoln saying, "I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes."

Paris, 27 June 1919. Letter. Minor paper loss at the right margin. About Fine. A one-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED with initials and written in French on a 4-3/4" x 6-1/2" sheet of paper folded in half with the address on the verso, date and place taken from envelope. Addressed to Mr. Gorardin [likely Maurice Girardin, a Parisian dentist who became a successful art dealer]. Roughly translated: "I have given the matter a great deal of thought and we will talk about it once again. Think about the workshops and let me know what you have learned, unless I find something at Versailles or farther. Forgive my reluctance. It is not due to a lack of confidence or of friendship which you will better understand when we talk. I hate to tie myself down but have a great love for my independence, and I don't know to which it refers, morally advantageous. See you on Wednesday." Rouault (1871-1958) was a French painter, draughtsman, and printer whose devout Catholicism heavily influenced his paintings whose subjects… Read More

Description:
Boston, 10 March 1888. Manuscript. Normal light creases. A Fine example from this noted author and doctor. On a 6-7/8" x 9" piece of paper the author has written the following seven-line stanza from one of his best known poems "The Chambered Nautilus": Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea! Below this he has SIGNED "Oliver Wendell Holmes/Boston, March 10th 1888." On the verso of the paper (though not on the exact reverse side of the poem, so that one could cut the paper and have two separate autographed pieces), is a brief AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Holmes to a Miss Wright: "It gives one pleasure to comply with your slight request. Please turn this leaf. Very truly yours OW Holmes. Boston, March 10th 1888." The nautilus is a sea creature that lives inside a spiral… Read More

Oxford, 7 February 1876. Letter. Mild creases from mailing. Near Fine. One-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED "J Ruskin" on one side of an 8-3/4" x 7" sheet of Corpus Christi College stationery folded in half addressed to a Miss Rudkin. Ruskin requests that she send a bill [for the dress she purchased for him to give as a present]. "I don't usually let my debts stand so long; will you kindly send ... the account for my last indulgence in your charming and too tempting imaginations. Really, in the truth of old English -- that blue dress was 'excellent well fancied!'" In his letter to Ms. Rudkin written on October 29 of the previous year, Ruskin asked that she find "a pretty, quiet, thoroughly strong, and not fussy nor catchy sort of dress for Ethel Hilliard."

Description:
Paris, 24 November 1920. Letter. Close to Fine. Small (4-1/2" x 6-1/2") AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED "James Joyce" to Madame Yasushi Tanaka (Louise Gebhard Cann) on blue paper integral with envelope which is addressed in Joyce's hand and postmarked on the verso. In full: "Dear Madam, In reply to your letter I shall call on you on Sunday afternoon next as it seems to be the most convenient time for you. Sincerely yours, James Joyce." Louise Gebhard Cann was a prominent writer and art critic in early 20th century France. At Ezra Pound’s suggestion, Cann wrote to Joyce requesting an interview with him for an article on writers in France set to appear in an upcoming issue of THE PACIFIC REVIEW. Following publication of the "Nausicaa" episode of ULYSSES in THE LITTLE REVIEW the previous year, Joyce’s writing was deemed obscene. This particular issue of THE LITTLE REVIEW was effectively banned in the United States, and it is believed that because of the controversy the editors then decided to omit any… Read More

An early one-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED "J Ruskin," written when he was just 17 years old, on one panel of a 10" x 8" sheet folded in fours addressed to W. H. In full: "I take the liberty of troubling you with the accompanying papers [not present], as I am not aware of the manner in which communications are usually presented to the Society. I shall be highly gratified of the members of the Meteorological Society consider these observations, for the accuracy of which I can answer, though of their utility I am doubtful, as in any degree interesting." In a letter to his father three days later, Ruskin wrote, "The Society would be much better employed, instead of listening to anticipations which never will be realised, and prophecies which the weather takes good care not to fulfil, in as certaining the causes and effects of phenomena which have actually taken… Read More
