FIRST PRINTING on wove paper and with half-title and frontispiece with blank versos and with "THE" on the half-title page in 10-point rather than 14-point type. Original blue cloth with peach endpapers with front and rear triple flyleaves of laid paper; four pages of ads at the rear. BAL 3369. MacDonnell, 39-40. Illustrated by True Williams and others.

Boston: Phillips, Sampson & Co., 1858. First Edition. Hardcover. Moderate foxing, later owner name on front endpaper. Despite the two missing plates, a Near Fine copy. BAL 8781: Printing 2, Binding C of original brown cloth, no rings. The sheets measure 7-1/2 x 4-3/4, which falls between the paper size of the regular issue and the large paper issue. One of the Grolier 100 Influential American Books Printed Before 1900. This copy bound with only six (of eight) plates.

(New York): New Directions, (1959). First Edition. Hardcover. Fine in a lightly soiled, Near Fine dustwrapper with a very small chip at the head of the spine. Crandell A13.I.c. The limited edition was issued five years previously. Dustwrapper designed by Elaine Lustig.

Gilt is bright. Verty Good to Near Fine, lacking a dustwrapper if it ever had one. Dark brown cloth with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Translated from the Russian by S. S. Koteliansky and Gilbert Cannan. Seven stories by the master: "The House with the Mezzanine;" "Typhus;" "Gooseberries;" "In Exile;" "The Lady with the Toy Dog;" "Goussiev;" and "My Life."
