A fairly large image (7-1/4" x 9-1/4") mounted on 10" x 13" stiff board with the photographer's stamp at the bottom center "Alman & Co./436 Fifth Ave., N.Y./and Newport, R.I." depicting an elderly Howe holding a baby and surrounded by three family members including her two daughters who wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning biography of their mother. SIGNED in ink below the image: "Julia Ward Howe/Jan. 26th, 1904." The verso of the photograph is SIGNED by one of those daughters, Laura Richards: "Mrs. Henry Richards/Gardiner, Maine." Howe, active in the women's suffrage movement, is perhaps best known as the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," written at night near the beleaguered capital of Washington at the beginning of the Civil War. Portland [ME]: Lamson, n.d.. Photograph. Fine. Wonderful SIGNED photograph (2-1/2" x 3-7/8") of Hans Christian Andersen seated at a small table and holding an open book. On the otherwise blank verso of the photograph, Andersen has written, in English, "The first moment of arrival at home is however the Bouquet of the whole voyage!" with his full SIGNATURE below: "Hans Christian Andersen." The photograph was given to George Helm Yeaman who had been appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to the post of Minister Plenipotentiary to Denmark where he served under the Grant Administration initiating conversations which eventually resulted in the purchase of the Virgin Islands. At the end of Grant's Administration, he returned to New York and it was at this time that Andersen gave him the inscribed picture. Framed Photograph. Matted and framed. Fine. Fine 8" x 10" black-and-white photograph of Carter smiling admirably at famed Hollywood restaurant owner Maude Chasen. INSCRIBED and SIGNED as President in the upper right margin: "To my Georgia/friend Maude/Chasen/Jimmy Carter/9-23-77." Maude Chasen died at the age of 97 in 2001. Her husband, Dave Chasen, opened Chasen's Southern Pit Barbecue on Dec. 13, 1936. Frank Capra lent Chasen his silverware for the restaurant's opening. It was a favorite spot for many stars including Clark Gable, Jimmy Cagney, Marilyn Monroe, and scores of others. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard M. Nixon, and Ronald Reagan, who proposed to future wife Nancy there, frequented the restaurant which was the site of the Academy Awards party for many years and which closed in 1995. Photograph. A couple of minor smudges to two words and written on a portion of Wilder's dark suit but still quite clear and bold. A few minor dings. Near Fine. A 6-3/4" x 9-1/4" formal portrait of Wilder in middle age or beyond by an unidentified photographer INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the subject in the lower right corner: "For Rosalind/Ivan/with the/regards and/thanks of/Thornton Wilder. "Signed photos of Wilder of quality are distinctly uncommon.

Photograph. Minor wrinkling to upper corners. Still Near Fine. An 8" x 10" black-and-white formal portrait of a pensive Lewis, head on his fist and looking down. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the light background on the left side: "To Guy/Palmerton/Sinclair Lewis." The photo is also signed in the image by the photographer, Talbot of New York. Signed photographs by Lewis are uncommon. Ink photographer's credit on verso. Two letters in "Lewis" slightly smudged.

1961. Photograph. About Fine. Vintage 8" x 10" photograph of Frost seated outside a house next to a woman (the recipient?) with two men seated on each side of them, with the stamp of the photographer on the verso: John F. Smith, Jr. of Middlebury, Vermont. Loosely inserted into a mat on which at the bottom is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the poet: "to Elaine McAllister from Robert Frost Bread Loaf VT '61/Christmas greetings." It is likely that the other seated men are writers and/or teachers at Bread Loaf, but we were unable to identify them.

A 6" x 7-7/8" black-and-white silver print portrait by Madame Yevonde, laid down on an 8" x 10" piece of stiff paper, of Lewis on his wedding day to Dorothy Thompson, SIGNED by the photographer in red pencil beneath the image. Also SIGNED by Lewis on the mat and by Thompson on the photograph: "For Bob with the affection/of Dorothy Thompson/and." Lewis has added his nickname "Hal" to Thompson's inscription. Accompanied by a 7" x 8-3/4" original press photograph dated "February 1930" in red pencil on the verso with Lewis's name in pencil and an ink stamp stating "Received Examiner/Reference Library" and the date in February 1930, the day faded.

Photograph. Light wrinkling to right side. Still Near Fine. A 6" x 8-3/4" vintage formal portrait by Pirie Mac Donald, "Photographer of Men." INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author: "To Miss Christy/with best wishes from/Booth Tarkington/1931." Miss Christy is likely the silent film star Ann Christy who, like Tarkington, hailed from Indiana. Nearly fifty films were made from Tarkington's novels and plays between 1914 and 1951. Signed photos by the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novels THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and ALICE ADAMS are distinctly uncommon.

n.p.. Framed Photograph. Fading to the ink but still readable. A lovely presentation. An 8" x 10" black-and-white portrait of the elderly poet, partly in shadow, matted and framed to an overall size of 12" x 14". INSCRIBED and SIGNED to poet William Meredith: "Robert Frost/to/William Meredith/in friendship/Aug. 9, 1960." With a ticket to a reading by Frost at Connecticut College on 9 December 1962, less than two months before Frost's death.

Framed Photograph. A beautiful presentation in perfect condition, not examined out of the frame. Wonderful 8" x 10" black-and-white photograph showing Gershwin partly in shadow and seated playing the piano, elaborately matted and framed to an overall size of 20" x 17-1/2," SIGNED by the composer with the sentiment "Sincerely."

An 8" x 10" black-and-white portrait of the author of FROM HERE TO ETERNITY and THE THIN RED LINE in a suit and tie standing before a part of his book collection and holding an open book. INSCRIBED (possibly in another hand) and SIGNED by the author at the top of the photograph. Accompanied by a TYPED LETTER SIGNED forwarding the photograph.
